The main actor of the movie was Cecil Gaines the character which was presented by Forest Whitaker, the movie begins as Cecil Gaines recounts his life story. Gaines was raised on a cotton plantation, whereas the owner of the farm "Thomas Westfall" raped his mother,Cecil's father tried to confront Westfall for his act and so was shot dead. Later Annabeth Westfall the estates's caretaker of the house trains Cecil to become a house servant. Cecil decided to leave the plantation and his mother, he breaks into a hotel pastry shop and gets hired. At the hotel he learns advanced skills from the master servant, who by his turn recommends Cecil for a position in a Washington D.C. hotel. Cecil's wife falls into alcoholism and an affair with the neighbor. During John F kennedy's era, louis and others were attacked while traveling on a bus, moreover Louis participates in a protest where water cannons were used to stop the marchers, this was a spark which inspired president kennedy to address a civil rights act, couple of months after the speech, kennedy is assassinated. His successor president Johnson turns the transformative legislation into law. Furthermore Louis participated in Selma voting rights movement in 1965, this movement inspired President Johnson to establish a voting rights act. After the assassination of Martin Luther, Louis joins the radical organization called the black panthers. Cecil's other son, Charlie joins the army in the war in Vietnam where he gets killed. Louis later leaves the organization and returns to college, earning a master degree in political science and runs for a seat at the congress. During Ronald Reagans presidential era, Cecil's reputation grows to a point that he receives an invitation by President Reagan to a state
