On November 11th, 1918, the Germans finally ended World War I by signing an armistice after many casualties. At the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, the “Big Four” met to deliberate and decide what the peace terms would be for the defeated Central Powers. The peace treaty produced for Germany was the Treaty of Versailles, which Germany had no choice but to sign even though the punishment was harsh and deserved. The Treaty of Versailles took away German conquered land, large part of its army, and stated that Germany had to compensate the Allied Powers for the damages they caused.
The Allied and Associated Governments affirm and Germany accepts the responsibility of Germany and her allies for causing all the loss and damage to which the Allied and Associated Governments and their nationals have been subjected as a consequence of the war imposed upon them by the aggression of Germany and her allies.
Germany and the other Central Powers, received all the blame for World War I. But they could not have lost the war without fighting against the war’s victors.
Prior to World War I, countries all over the world were exuding so much nationalistic pride from modernization and colonization. The more colonies they attained and the more industrialized a country became, the more power it had. Britain had been the first country to really industrialize but Germany quickly caught up and also created a large navy. Russia was supporting Serbian Slav-nationalism and Germany was supporting Austria-Hungary. France and Germany nearly went to war over colonies in Africa, in 1905. ...ization but it caught up to other European powers. If they won the war they would surpass those previous European powers such as France and Britain, and come out on top. All the countries that took part of the war fought because they wanted to protect the power their country had at the time and did not want to fall due to the rise of another. Since the objective of the war was really to stop other countries from gaining more power, Germany was not entirely wrong in how they fought against the Allies.
The Treaty of Versailles was reasonable in the sense that Germany had to deal with the consequences of their actions. And it is understandable that the Allied Powers won the war so they would be the ones to dish out the punishment. However, the Allied Powers took part in the war too. That is how they won and they were not able to win the war without contributing to it.
