DBQ Depression Essay
From 1929 to 1940, the United States experienced its worst long-lasting period of high unemployment rates and poor economy: the Great Depression. Buying on margin, speculation, and buying on credit could have been the main factors that led the stock market to crash, and, consequently, gave a start to the Great Depression. These facts strongly support that the Great Depression was caused by people’s buying habits.
People´s optimism about the stock market was high right before it crashed. According to John T. Raskob, “ If [people] invest in good common stocks… [they] will be rich… [after 20 years]...” (Document C). In other words, everyone could become rich by investing in the stock market, and that is what people believed. …show more content…

As said by William E. Leuchtenburg, “[debt was] no longer regarded as shameful… [people] bought goods on installment at a rate faster than their income was expanding…” (Document H). This means that time before, people used to be ashamed of being in debt, but people’s minds changed and they began to “buy now and pay later”. Elmer Davis said: “the bill will be all the larger when it finally has to be faced” (Document M). What he meant is that when people were required to pay what they had acquired before the depression, they were not able to do so because they had lost their money. This affected negatively the economy of both them and the company.
Given these points, it is fair to say that people’s buying habits played a strong role in causing the Great Depression. The stock market speculation caused it to crash. Then buying just a little, saving, and buying on credit, although seemed to be positive actions for the economy, actually had worse effects. Americans are the engine of the United States’ economy, the buyers and workers had the economy’s destiny in their hands.
