Domestic violence seems to be an issue in America today. I am trying to determine some of the causes and effect of domestic violence in society. To my knowledge alcohol and domination are major causes of domestic violence. A lot of what I am about to write comes from firsthand experience in the subject of domestic violence.

Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of aggressive and dominating behavior that one individual inflicts on another. The four types of domestic violence are physical, sexual, economic, and emotional abuse. Alcohol use is a main cause of domestic violence. Domination may be another cause of domestic violence. This paper will discuss further on all three topics.

I personally know alcohol is a cause of domestic violence. Ever since I was a small child I can recall instances of domestic violence affecting my life. When people consume alcohol generally they are very happy and calm. My dad on the other hand, becomes very violent, aggressive, and out of control. There have been many instances during my years growing up where I had to get between my parents so that no one was harmed. There are times when holes have been punched in walls, beer bottles have been thrown and broken, cans have been smashed and beer is all over the place, and many other things. There was one time when my dad and brother had been drinking and got into an argument because my dad threatened to punch my mom. My brother was protecting my mom. During this time they were physically fighting and threatening to kill each other. Needless to say they both were placed in police custody due to the fact we could not stop them and the police were called. The police could not determine who started the argument so they both went to jail. There is also another time very recently my dad was at a party and was drinking very heavily all afternoon. He and another person were discussing football and my dad started pushing and throwing punches. It ended up with me throwing my dad down to the ground to end the fight. The next morning after questioning my dad he could not remember anything that had happened the previous night due to excessive alcohol consumption. Those are just two of the many examples I could present. With these examples you can clearly see how alcohol can cause domestic violence.
