For the most part, Christians and Muslims had very different ideas concerning the plague. There are three main differences Christians and Muslims had on the plague. First, Christians and Muslims differed on how it got started. Second, they did not agree on whether or not it was really a sign from God. Finally, they disagreed on the different techniques needed to stop the plague from spreading. While Christians and Muslims agreed on some points, there were more differences than similarities. Christians and Muslims had different ideas on the causes of the plague. Christians thought that it was because of the sin that people committed. Many wondered what the true cause of the Black Plague was and how it spread all across the world in such a short amount of time. Throughout its time period, many medical authorities and scientists sought to give rational explanations for the reasons why the plague was spreading and believed it was caused by several factors such as: “corrupted air and water, hot and humid southerly winds, proximity of swamps, lack of purifying sunshine, excrement and other filth, putrid decomposition of dead bodies, excessive indulgence in foods (particularly fruits), God's wrath, punishment for sins, and the conjunction of stars and planets” (Encyclopedia of Plague and Pestilence). The confusion and lack of scientific knowledge on the harmful disease caused much panic and triggered many outbreaks among individuals. Many people began to start placing cities and ships under quarantine, burning sulfur to purify bad air, burning clothes, and even blaming and killing Jews in hope that they could solve a cure or at least stop the spread.
One of the largest epidemic events in history, the Bubonic Plague had a devastating effect on European society. It is believed to have begun in China, and it reached European soil in 1347, when it struck Constantinople (Document 1). It was carried by infected fleas that spread the disease between humans and rats. A symptom of the plague was the development of large, dark swellings called “buboes” on the victim’s lymph nodes. By the time the plague left, Europe’s population had been reduced by almost half. The devastation as a result of the plague may seem shocking, but there were several important factors that contributed to its deadliness.
The infamous plague, known as the Black Death, was a deadly disease which managed to spread throughout Europe and the Middle East in the 14th century. Although both the Europeans and the Empires of Islam experienced the Black Death, each region had different responses and reasons for the causes of the disease. Empires of Islam viewed the plague as a blessing from God while Europeans believed it was a punishment from Him. As a result of the Black Death, Europeans rebelled whereas Empires of Islam respected authority. Europeans used other religions as an explanation for the start of the Black Death while Islamic empires did not blame other religions, but rather had other explanations that caused the disease.
Both religions were terrified of the disease, but the Muslims were more accepting of it. Muslims did not blame anybody for the plague, they just accepted it as a type of holy penance and moved on. Christians, on the other hand, blamed the Jews. Many Jews in Europe were forced to convert to Christianity because of the deadly discrimination they were receiving, therefore, leading them to “convert or die”. Even some Jews that converted also died by the hands of Christians. One might think that this discrimination against the Jews during this time was like a miniature holocaust. The plague was one of the most devastating points in time for the Athenians and Thebans.They did not know who to turn to for help. The people in the cities of Athens and Thebes had different reactions when they were faced with the plague. In The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides, during the plague speech by Pericles, the plague in Athens had made the Athenians lose their faith in the gods and let human nature take over. However, in Oedipus the King by Sophocles, everyone went to the leader for help and never stopped praying to the gods. In both cities their reactions differed in that the Athenians lost their faith while the Thebans continued their faith in the gods while going through the difficult time of the plague.

When the plague first hit most people weren’t too concerned, thinking that it would be cured and it wasn’t anything to spectacular. That thought quickly changed as the epidemic spread like wildfire and killed most of the people who caught it very quickly. It wiped out over a quarter of Europe and surrounding countries and no one knew where it came from. Many people thought that because it was incurable and killed so efficiently that this was the apocalypse starting. The Plague (French, La Peste) is a novel written by Albert Camus that is about an epidemic of bubonic plague. The Plague is set in a small Mediterranean town in North Africa called Oran. Dr. Bernard Rieux, one of the main characters, describes it as an ugly town. Oran’s inhabitants are boring people who appear to live, for the most part, habitual lives. The main focus of the town is money. “…everyone is bored, and devotes himself to cultivating habits. Our citizens work hard, but solely with the object of getting rich. Their chief interest is in commerce, and their chief aim in life is, as they call it, 'doing business’” (Camus 4). The citizens’ unawareness of life’s riches and pleasures show their susceptibility to the oncoming plague. They don’t bother themselves with matters not involving money. It is very easy for the reader to realize that they are too naive to combat the forthcoming calamity. The theme of not knowing life is more than work and habits will narrow the people’s chances of survival. Rieux explains that the town had a view of death as something that happens every day. He then explains that the town really doesn’t face towards the Mediterranean Sea. Actually it is almost impossible to see the sea from town. Oran is a town which seems to turn its back on life and freedom. The Plague was first published in 1948 in France. “Early readers were quick to note that it was in part an allegory of the German occupation of France from 1940 to 1944, which cut France off from the outside world; just as in the novel the town of Oran must close its gates to isolate the plague” (“The Plague” 202). We live in a world where people become sick and infected with bacterial infections. Since mankind was born, infections continue to persevere and adapt. In the the thirteenth century, people meet a new kind of disease that could be transmitted from person to person. It was in this era that people began to get infected with diseases that caused a slow and painful death. In the modern era, the scientific world has innovated new antibiotics and vaccinations to prevent us from getting infections. However, not everybody was so fortunate, in the Middle Ages a massive outbreak of a deadly infections plagued most of Europe. The Bubonic Plague also known as the Black Death diminished one third of Europe’s population.
The bubonic plague was a horrifying plague that wiped out about 1/3 of the world’s population. The bubonic plague travelled very quickly but some question what it was that caused it to travel so quickly. In analyzing the fact that infectious droplets, human choices and trade were all major factors of the spread, one can conclude that humans had a major impact on the spread of the Bubonic Plague.
During the course of the Plague common beliefs and/or concerns underwent a dramatic change. During the early years of the Plague outbreak the prevalent belief was of fear of the Plague and its uncertainty of the cause. Most people during this time were concerned that the Plague would affect their economy and their own work/business. People were also concerned of their lives and their family's well being. Then as time went on beliefs changed from this to fear to a religious superstition.

With the help of a book The Black Death by Rosemary Horrox I was able to find explanations of them all. Who may know which is the correct reason for such a thing but what your think caused it is for you to decide.
The moral inflictions seem to be the cause and the reasoning behind the spread and virulence of the disease. All diseases are part of the humors medical theory that was in force at the time, that presupposed an imbalance of the humors in the first place in order for there to be a disease. Therefore, in order for such a virulent outbreak of disease to take place, killing young and old, or rich and poor alike, it would be reasonable to assume that a greater moral transgression was being applied by a divine force - “… for I looked upon this dismal time to be a particular season of Divine vengeance, and that God would on this occasion single out the proper objects of His displeasure in a more especial and remarkable manner than at another time”
