According to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, cyberterrorism is any “premeditated, politically motivated attack against information, computer systems, computer programs, and data which results in violence against non-combatant targets by sub-national groups or clandestine agents.” (SearchSecurity). Although cyber terrorism is only a single type of terrorism, the causes are the same. There are two main causes of terrorism. One of these main causes is social and political injustice. Some people have chosen to become terrorists because they believe that by acting out in this way that they will correct some political wrongdoing. It was much different from the normal way of terrorists. Terrorists were defying the most well believed theory. They set their own boundaries. Now with new technology terrorists could do terroristic acts without endangering themselves. They could sit comfortably in a room, and still transmit a “bomb” through a computer. When this happens, a civilian gets the “bomb” and their life could possibly be in jeopardy as well as those around them. There is a possibility that cyber terrorism could rival the September eleven terrorist attacks of 2001. “US Secretary of Defense said ‘The US is facing dramatically increasing threat from cyber-attacks and a future attack on the country’s critical infrastructure could have an effect similar to the September 11 terrorist attacks of 2001.’” (ComputerWorld). With all of the most important information on the internet because most people believe it is safer, it makes it an easier mark for terrorists. Those who believe it is safer for them to put all of their information online, could be risking their lives. Cyberterrorism could be compared to identity theft. They are similar in that with more and more people putting their information online, there are more possibilities for ruined lives. (ComputerWorld). So far the government has taken a military role in preventing cyber terrorism. Most were surprised with the speed at which any cyber terrorist attack hits. Cyberterrorism can be a risky, even deadly thing to mess around with. Following the steps above should be able to help most people prevent, or deal with, a cyber terrorist
