When it comes to the impact of concussions, people do not think that concussions are as severe as they really are. A concussion is a traumatic brain injury caused by a blow to the head or a violent shaking of your head and body. Although there may not be any visible evidence that someone may have a concussion, they are painful. Concussion symptoms can last ranging from a week to having the symptoms for the rest of your life. Concussions are arguably known to be the worst injury to an athlete because it leads to serious things such as brain damage. It is highly important that people of all ages understand the seriousness behind concussions. I have experienced the pain of concussions three times. According to a study done by the National Football League in 2015, concussions in the regular season had decreased 35 percent. Although there has continued to be a decrease of concussions due to people being more aware of them, “a total of 87 out of 91 former NFL players have tested positive for a brain disease…” (Breslow). Although concussions happen primarily in high contact sports such as football, concussions occur in other sports too. During the 2014 World Cup, there were several players that were knocked out completely unconscious, but resumed playing in the game a few minutes later after their trainers decided the player was sufficient enough to go back onto the field. People are seen with crutches and boots on, but when people are concussed, people do not see the pain that a concussion brings. Concussion awareness has grown throughout the years, but the awareness that it is at today could be better in the next couple years. Schools have started giving athletes with concussions the treatment they deserve rather than pushing the students into doing their work. One of my sister’s friends got a concussion from volleyball. She was going for the ball and in the process of doing this, she ran into the bleachers. This happened in 2012 when the seriousness behind concussions was not a big deal, so she was told to continue going to school and do her everyday activities as if nothing happened. Due to the lack of treatment that she received, to this day, she still has headaches and short term memory
