A Series of Unfortunate Characteristics Within every Edgar Allan Poe story, there are unique characters. “The Cask of Amontillado” is no different in the characteristics associated with Poe’s two main roles. The victim in this particular short story, Fortunato, possesses distinctive attributes that lead to his untimely demise. Evidence through the entirety of the short story demonstrates that Fortunato led himself to him own death by the personality traits he contains. Throughout “The Cask of Amontillado,” Fortunato is seen as unaware of his surroundings, too trustworthy of Montresor, envious of his peers, and prideful until the moment of his downfall. Again, Fortunato numerously refused to consider his health as to how it would affect his image. Rather than return to the carnival and be seen as unable to complete a wine-tasting task, Fortunato continues within the cavern to protect his pride. As Fortunato state, "the cough's a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough" (Poe). This statement shows that Fortunato’s pride is the true mastermind of his murder, and Montresor simply had motive to act upon this characteristic. The arrogance that Fortunato demonstrates throughout his time with Montresor, evidence shows that he continues to pursue to gain a sense of superiority above his peers and boost his pride. Montresor is very aware of Fortunato’s character, as he “uses his friend Fortunato’s egotistical tendencies” to convince him to walk to his own death. As the story shows that Fortunato’s death was premeditated, clearly Fortunato flaunts his prideful nature in all areas of his life(Whatley). The combination of his pride and his drunken state that overpowers his ability to see that he is being manipulated by his supposed friend.
