Lincoln electric company culture

Based on the case study by Arthur Sharplin regarding the culture of Lincoln electric company, my understanding of the company is that it is highly multi-cultural with many of the original values and concepts still in place.

Some of the first actions to be implemented by James Lincoln (the general manager and the founders younger brother),was to have the employees elect representatives to a committee that would discussion operation twice a month, they offered a welding school for employees, they offered health benefits, social activities, stock options, pension plan, annual bonuses. (“Cultures that emphasize achievement, results, and action”.) Lincoln believed in offering cash incentives based on performance he believed in paying the workers what they earned and that “The earnings of each must be in accordance with accomplishments.”

Lincoln electric also displayed some aspects of a stable culture. (“Predictable, rule-oriented, and bureaucratic”).As mentioned earlier turnover was basically nonexistent. The Job security at Lincoln was described by Sharpins like this “After one year, each employee is guaranteed that he will not be discharged except for misconduct, and he is guaranteed at least 30 hours of work each week. There has been no layoff at Lincoln since 1949.” I believe the only factor of being stable that didn’t really apply was bureaucratic. Lincoln welcomed change and new ideas from anyone if it was for the benefit of the company.

A team oriented culture. (“Cultures that are collaborative and emphasize cooperation among employees”.)Due to the nature of the production all products from start to finish are completed by the whole team, each individual completing his segment in the process. (Every member of the organization is encourages to be aware of, and to suggest, any ways to cut costs, reduce waste, and improve performance. “An open door policy is practiced throughout the company and personnel are encouraged to take problems to the persons most capable of resolving them.”

And finally Lincoln electric also shows that it has a strong culture. (a strong culture is one that is shared by organizational members.) Low turnover, exceptional benefits, profit sharing, and a voice in the organization process.
