The 2015 Chipotle’s outbreak can be avoided if the management teams take the correct measure to addressing the food safety concern when it first appeared. A business Insider reported, the restaurant has been faced with food poisoning before. In March of 2008, more than 20 people after eating Chipotle in La Mesa, California developed Hepatitis A. A month later; another 500 people were sick after eating at the restaurant. The possible cause linked to an infectious employee of Chipotle. The unthinkable happened again in 2009 when 29 people across six states infected with E.coli after consuming of Chipotle iceberg lettuce. The restaurant lettuce supplier, Church Brothers, was responsible for the infections.
In my opinion, if the management team would approach the incident in 2008 and 2009 as a warning sign that there may be some underline issue with the restaurant’s policies regards to food safety. All supplier must pass the quality assurance and meet Chipotle food safety requirement. Next, I would look at the company’s policy regards to food handling and storage. To achieve the optimum food safety, I will seek outside expert to help understand the current flaws and rewritten the policy that meets the highest standard. Additionally, I will create a continuing program to ensure that Chipotle employee properly trained. HR policy will also need to reevaluate as well. An employee who sicks should be encouraged to stay home. Lastly, regular store inspection program will be implemented. This program will include mystery shopper where an expert will visit the store unexpectedly to evaluate the overall quality of the store services and food handling practice.
