It has appeared that approximately every few months, media outlets report incidences of tragedy involving a sole gunman targeting groups of people with the intent to harm or extinguish life due to various motives. Recent research data indicated that over 80 public mass shootings have occurred in the United States since 1983. Some of the more recent shootings to date are: Marysville-Pilchick High in October 2014; Santa Barbara, California in May 2014; Fort Hood, Texas U.S. Army base in April 2014; Washington Navy Yard in September 2013; Sandy Hook Elementary, Connecticut in December 2012; and Aurora Century 16 Movie Theater in Aurora, Colorado in July 2012.

A crew of ambulances, police cars, and fire trucks are seen speeding down the streets while blaring their sirens to warn people to move out of the way rapidly. Then, crowds of people are seen running down the street franticly. Sounds of earsplitting yells fill the air. Their eyes are filled with tears of fear and terror. They look as if they were running for their lives. There is a wave of worry and curiosity that washes over everyone’s face as they stand there from a distance watching it take place. There was a sense of wanting to run towards the chaos to see what was going on. But the panic of the people running gave off the feeling of “Warning! Do NOT come this way!” What was happening? Later that night, the news reports that another mass shooting took place earlier on in the day. In the 21st century, many crimes involving mass shootings are the main focus of the public eye in the media. With the technology of the 21st century, investigators are able to look more into depth of the criminal’s background to see if they have a history of mental illness.

An active shooter incident is a form of workplace violence that has increased at an alarming rate. From the year 2000 through 2013 there have been a 6.4% increase in annual shooting in commercial environments from 2000 to 2007 and an 11% increase of active shooter incidents form the years of 2008 through 2013 (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2014). There are many factors that contribute to active shooter incidents, including everyday home and work stresses, unemployment, substance addiction and major stresses (e.g. death of a loved one). There are multiple crime television shows that are based on a true story or fiction. A well known television show is Law and Order Special Victims Unit, which deals with rape and assault cases. This particular episode deals with a domestic violence case between a retired football star, AJ Martin, and his girlfriend, Paula Bryant. The Maxima supermarket disaster was a tragedy that occurred in Riga, Latvia on November 21, 2014. The Republic of Latvia is a country in Northern Europe and is surrounded by modern day Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Belarus and a small portion of Sweden..The supermarket opened in 2011 as a retail store that sold many different types of merchandise. The store was connected to a new apartment complex that was built across from the supermarket and was also built by the same construction company. The building was developed by Homburg Valda. The architectural design was by Zane Kalinka and Andris Kalinka from the local architectural firm of KUBS. The cause of this disaster was due to the collapse of the roof of the supermarket. The building was five hundred square meters large; once the roof collapsed the entire structure was destroyed. There were many people shopping in the market at the time of the collapse. Once the roof collapsed, emergency vehicles were at the scene in minutes. There was up to thirteen fire trucks at the supermarket to help rescue the victims. However, there was a second collapse that occurred after the rescue mission had already begun which resulted in the deaths of three Latvian firefighters. Despite the emergency efforts made by the Latvian police and fire department, fifty-four people were killed in this disaster and forty-one were left injured. There was a green garden being constructed on the roof of the building of the collapse. The West Edmonton Mall (WEM) is a leading tourism attraction located in Alberta, Canada used to shop. West Edmonton Mall covers an area of around 5.27 million square feet and has parking space for more that 20 000 vehicles. The mall consisted of over 800 stores and attracts a great number of shoppers – 90 00 to 200 000 – daily. It was the largest shopping center in the world for 24 years, until 2004 and has made it to the Guinness World Records. The mall remains the largest shopping center throughout North America.
One of the most populated places at all times is the mall. That is why I decided to visit a local mall to observe various types of interactions in a public setting. Even though most people consider themselves to be almost invisible in a public place, they often are not. Most people go to the mall for a particular reason: shopping, food, walking, or anything else that may be related to the type of shops in the mall. That is why the type of people that visit, are just as eclectic, thus their interactions are that much more interesting to observe. The mall that I visited is comparatively new, with three stories altogether. The bottom one is mostly occupied by the food court, while the second and third host a movie theater and a children’s playground.
