Mission

The Children’s Museum of Tacoma celebrates the power of play in the life-long journey of learning. We share the mission, vision and philosophy of Children’s Museums across the nation, museum’s that are changing standards and leading the implementation of informal learning in the development of the young child. The Children’s Museum of Tacoma positively influences the social, emotional and cognitive abilities of our Pierce County children, families and communities.

Goals

The Board gathered in 2008 to review and extend the Museum’s strategic plan. Guiding their vision for 2015 are the Museum’s values of respect, inspiration, lifelong learning, and Play! The Board ordered a community needs assessment, and armed with the results identified a set of goals for 2015. These are:

1. Increasing capacity, audience and access by becoming a gathering place for families, establishing connections to communities within the County, and an increased commitment to access while increasing earned income.

2. Promoting fun, learning and the wonder of childhood by showcasing the natural connection of playing and learning in programs, events and environments and influencing community development, business practices and educational systems

3. Demonstrating innovation, playfulness and excellence by building a playfully efficient business model and creating processes that set ambitious standards for excellence

Objectives

The Board is committed to meeting these goals through expansion into a new facility, fostering play based school readiness efforts, opening access and stabilizing program funding, and investments in staff education, training and expertise. The Board plans to meet these goals through:

Budget

The Children’s Museums’ current budget is $752,035, of which 59% is spent on programs. Additional expenses are marketing and development (14%) and the current facility and administration costs account for 19% of its budget.

Conclusion

With the site selection complete and the Capital Campaign in planning, the Children’s Museum of Tacoma can look forward to a future of great opportunity and promise, and all of Pierce County will benefit.
