In Carson McCullers's, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, has many themes and motifs that we can see throughout this novel. The most important theme is the challenges of isolation. The story has 5 main characters, and they each have their own struggle as they try to communicate and engage with society. They all have their own individual reason why they face certain challenges and keep themselves isolated from the world. John Singer is the deaf-mute man who can’t connect and communicate with most of the world is because he cannot talk to other people and engage in conversation. Since he cannot hear or speak it is interesting for the other characters to ask themselves and crave to want to know what does he think about.Just because he lives in silence he could be seen as a hero or as a loving human being. As stated in the Salem Press Encyclopedia of Literature it reads, “One night, Mr. Singer steps up to help Dr. Copeland light a cigarette in the rain. It is the first time a white man has ever offered him help or smiled at him.” He loved others even if their was an ounce of love that he would receive back, and he saw himself as being equal to everyone. Mick shows love when she sacrifices school when she goes straight to work to take care of her family.Aside from heroism and love, hope in this novel is embodied in each of the alienated characters and they have a goal that the desire to reach. For example, Mick envisions that soon she will travel in many parts of the world as a famous musician,.Dr. Copeland's hopes that one day the black race will have justice, fair education, and can one day make it out of poverty for the majority of them. Jake Blount wants American workers to understand the oppression and that they soon must understand that they have certain rights they must work for. McCullers's novel captivates the struggles of real people from different hardships that each character's faces and expresses many positive themes out of her southern gothic
