The comedian and satirical news host Jon Stewart had a feud with former hedge fund manager and financial expert Jim Cramer. For people unfamiliar with these characters; Jon Stewart is the host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central, and Jim Cramer is the host of Mad Money on CNBC. Stewart grilled Cramer for over 15 minutes and posed the question, "What’s the difference between a multimillion dollar media “financial expert” and an ordinary street hustler?" Stewart believes Cramer is more an entertainer as himself and he should not be making stock recommendations to the public at large.
Plaintiff Debra Denise Gregg filed a sexual harassment suit for violations of Title VII, and the District of Columbia Human Rights Act against Hay-Adams Hotel. She sought $1,000,000 in compensatory damages and $1,000,000 for damages resulting from emotional distress and $1,000,000 in punitive damages. Plaintiff Anthony Gregg brought the claim for damages resulting from loss of companionship and consortium in the amount of $1,000,000. The judges dismissed the case on the grounds that the plaintiff’s accounts lacked consortium and that the facts did not support her claims for emotional distress and punitive damage.
Up until and during the mid -1800’s, women were stereotyped and not given the same rights that men had. Women were not allowed to vote, speak publically, stand for office and had no influence in public affairs. They received poorer education than men did and there was not one church, except for the Quakers, that allowed women to have a say in church affairs. Women also did not have any legal rights and were not permitted to own property. Overall, people believed that a woman only belonged in the home and that the only rule she may ever obtain was over her children. However, during the pre- Civil war era, woman began to stand up for what they believed in and to change the way that people viewed society (Lerner, 1971). Two of the most famous pioneers in the women’s rights movement, as well as abolition, were two sisters from South Carolina: Sarah and Angelina Grimké.

Odes says that her managers asked her to “tape her breasts down.” The managers had previously complained about her physical appearance and attire at work. One day, they said that she either needed to put on a red robe, or go buy another outfit. While she was out purchasing the other outfit, the managers terminated her. Marco “Marlo Kaitlin,” a former Wells Fargo employee, claims she was harassed and mocked to the point that brought her near to suicide. Her lawsuit against Wells Fargo was filed with Los Angeles Superior Court last July 14th. She alleged wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, hostile work environment, retaliation, and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress on the part of Wells Fargo. Although many of her actions were parallel with fellow manager in General Accounting Troy Nordmand’s, he did not receive a prison sentence due to the fact that he attempted to leave the company (although Vinson did initially plan to resign). Conversely, Vinson was sentenced to five months in prison and five months of home detention. One particularly interesting aspect of Betty Vinson’s case is the inclusion of her concerns over taking home pay and having health insurance, in addition to the fact that she had a positive reputation and was known for doing “anything you told her”. While it is normal to have concerns over job security, the emotional appeals in her situation add a different side to the story. One could argue that she is a victim -- she could have been targeted due to her reputation, or that fear drove her to do things she otherwise would not have considered. The issue here, however, is that she facilitated the fulfillment of Sullivan’s requests and pleaded guilty to one count of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud. As far as the case specifies, despite any superior’s knowledge of Vinson’s tendencies, she was not absolutely forced to do or not do anything. In the story Serena by Ron Rash, he sets the story in the state of North Carolina within mountains. The main characters he creates are Serena Pemberton who is the main character, George Pemberton who is Serena’s husband, Rachel Harmon, and Jacob Harmon who is Rachel’s son. Throughout the book, Serena and her husband George have many struggles such as marriage problems and killing people who they see as a threat or competition to them. They also have to deal with the fact that Racheal was impregnated by George; they both share a son Jacob. Within the whole conflict of the book, the two characters that really stand out as opposites are Serena and Rachel. When it comes to Serena she expresses evilness, hatefulness, mysteriousness, and she is very manipulative. With Rachel, she shows kindness, compassion, and she is very down to earth. When it comes to similarities, both of these characters express pride and confidence.
In today’s society music influences people in many ways both for the better and for the worst. Music plays such a big role in modern society due to its easy accessibility like the radio. There are many artist in the world some that influence people for the better, muses, and others that influence others for the worst ,Monsters. Jon Lajoie is an example of a monster, he displays this in his song “Show me your genitals” when he degrades women to a lower standard, and talks about them like the are property On the other hand, Katy Perry represents a muse when she influences people for the better when she talks about being the best that you can be, never giving up, and that everything happens for a reason in her song “Firework”.
Both poems make a point to stress loneliness. Robinson’s poem seems to be addressing the reader more in a universal way, which is in keeping with the typical female writer of the time. The characters in Robinson’s poem do not have any names, thus enhancing this universality of the piece. The first line of the poem inserts the reader into the scene without any address or notice, “Upon a lonely beach,” and a theme that exists for both writers becomes apparent—that of loneliness.(see poem) Robinson does not harp on it as Coleridge does. For him, it seems to be a personal fear that haunts him, as do many other things throughout the poem. (see poem) For Robinson, though, the “lonely desert beach” is the setting and not explicitly given to the reader as a personal fear, however an interpretation as such is not out of the question. She just does not get as personal with the reader in her language. One could imagine implanting themselves into the role of the wedding guest, and engaging in discourse with the mariner. Isolation exists in both these poems through loneliness. For Coleridge it is the earlier mentioned “fear at my heart,” and for Robinson it could be due to her failing health at the time she wrote this poem. Nonetheless, both seem to grapple with the consequences of isolation on one’s identity.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, defines sexual harassment as a behavior of a sexual nature that affects an individual’s terms of employment or creates a hostile and intimidating work environment. According to the EEOC, it is “unlawful to harass a person, an applicant, or employee because of that person’s sex.” (Sexual Harassment) The term “sexual harassment” can be a bit misleading as other forms of work related harassment can take place that have nothing to do with ‘sex’ but do however, fall under the same umbrella. We will look to identify the different types of sexual harassment in the workplace, specifically, ‘Quid Pro Quo’ and what it’s like to work in a ‘Hostile Work Environment’. This paper will focus on the law, woman’s rights in the workplace, and discuss an example from the Supreme Court Case of: Meritor Savings Bank, FSB v. Vinson, 477 U.S. 57 (1986).
