A career map is a visual, codified approach to career management. In other words, it is a roadmap to your desired success and the steps necessary to achieve that goal.

Purpose, and Benefits of a Career Map

Many would ask, what is the purpose of a career map and why do I need one? The purpose of a career map is to give you a visual plan of your goals and strategies for achieving success. Career maps can vary in length depending on the situation. In my case, this career map is supposed to help me plan out my next 4 years at UNC Charlotte. It is vital that as a college student, you set goals for yourself. College is expensive, thus, being efficient and getting your degree in a reasonable amount of time is crucial to saving money. Setting goals will help you stay on track and better prepare you for the future.

Setting goals will also give you something to strive for. In order to be a successful businessman or woman it is important to set goals both short and long term. The most successful peopled in this day and age did not make it to the top because they were unprepared. They implement daily routines and ensure that they remain on the right path to success. Specific and realistic goals for me include:

For instance, writing your goals on paper. In my case, I have always enjoyed writing my short-term goals and then crossing them out when I complete them. This way, I know I have fulfilled my goal. Writing my goals down is something I do personally, but UNC Charlotte also has a plethora of resources to help achieve your goals.

Just to name a few, we have the University Center for Academic Excellence (UCAE), and the Writing Resources Center (WRC). Each of these resources is here at your disposal. For example, the UCAE has workshops and tutoring throughout the day which can give you some insight into new study tactics. The Writing Resource Center is available to help you identify and understand your strengths and weaknesses in your writing. They are extremely helpful and want to help you succeed.

Also, as undergraduate students, we have career coaches and an advisor to lead us in the right direction. Specifically, as pre-business majors, our advisors are in the Belk College of Business. Each advisor is extremely knowledgeable about the business program and each major inside the college. Along with the Advisors and Career Coaches, we also have our professors who are willing to help if you ask for assistance. Ultimately, you have all the help you need, it is a matter of how you use the resources
