Thomas Harris once said, "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti." There are so many bad things in the world but according to many, cannibalism is considered just about the worst. Depending on your point of view, it rises above criminal abominations such as rape and genocide. According to a recent poll conducted with 67 students and faculty of Crane High School, 55 percent of the people don't know of any cases involving cannibalism. This means that 45 percent do know of cases that involve cannibalism. Do you know of any cases that involve cannibalism?

Jose Luis Calva was a Mexican serial killer who earned himself the title of “The Cannibal.” He is believed to have killed and butchered two other women. They found chunks of flesh in a skillet, a leg and arm in the fridge, and bones in a cereal box. It was the first cannibalism case in Mexico. He thought of himself as a writer and he was working on a book titled “The Cannibal Poet” when he was found hanging in his prison cell. (3) There are plenty more killers who eat their victims. One of the many is, Austin Harrouff. When the police arrived at the scene they found Harrouff on top of John Stevens, making animal noises and tearing pieces of flesh off with his teeth. Cops tasered the crazed 19-year-old to no effect and even a police dog could not stop him continuing the attack. Anthony Morely is yet another cannibal. Morely slashed his lover's throat and stabbed him multiple times after they watched Brokeback Mountain. Morely carved up his flesh seasoned it with herbs, fried it in olive oil and then ate it. Rudy Eugene was high of drugs when he stripped naked a homeless man and ate his face off. Eugene ate both his eyes and other parts of his face leaving the homeless man badly disfigured. He was shot dead by the police. The last one is Peter Bryan. He murdered one his friends, Brian Cherry, by chopping of both arms and one leg. He later fried his friend’s brain in butter and ate it. On October 12, 1972, a Fairchild F- 227 of the Uruguayan Air Force, chartered by an amateur rugby team, set off from Montevideo in Uruguay for Santiago in Chile. (5) In 1972 members of a rugby team from Uruguay survived a plane crash in the Andes by eating the frozen remains of those who had died. Four freezing cold, starving and struggling men stand over their dead friend armed with razor blades and broken glass. The first incision was made nine days after the crash. They laid thin strips of flesh on a sheet of metal. They consumed the piece whenever they could bear it. After a gut-wrenching 72 days on their own, the final 16 survivors were finally rescued on Dec. 23, 1972. Twenty-nine of the people who left on the plane did not return and after two months, 16 survivors were rescued and became the inspiration for numerous documentaries, movies, and books. One of the books is “Alive” written by Piers Paul Read. It was originally published in April 1974. Following was the movie also named “Alive” it was released January 15, 1993.
