Canada is undoubtedly one of the most amazing countries in the world with countless characteristics. With three territories and ten provinces, Canada is home to over thirty five million people from an endless amount of backgrounds and nationalities. Canada is widely seen as a painfully polite country, a place with a terribly cold climate and meticulously clean cities. These stereotypes might hold some truth, but realistically, Canada is a place to be admired with its safety and freedom. An abundant amount of people, including myself, have taken this country for granted but realizing how fortunate we all are to live in an environment such as Canada’s, is something that is a privilege and an honor. If someone were to drive around Canadian cities, they might notice how culturally diverse the population is. For example, in Winnipeg the majority of the population seems to be of French and English people, but when you travel to different parts of the city you see people of other nationalities. In one part of the city known as Chinatown - where there is obvious Chinese architecture influence in the buildings’ roofs - you will see many Asians. Filipinos are also very present in Winnipeg and hold a Filipino Street Festival every year with cultural dances, floats and activities. Natives make up a lot of Winnipeg’s population as well and live in many places around the city. Our diversity in cultures and nationalities also gives us a “taste” of the rest of the world, the authenticity becomes more real as we can experience a country’s true traditional food or holiday. To me, this attribute shows that people who have immigrated here have picked Canada for a specific reason that they believe is important. Although it’s a stereotypical reputation, Canada is known to be a safe place with polite people, this is probably appealing to many who live in unsafe or war-torn countries. The fact that many countries see Canada in a positive way and that we have such a multicultural population makes me feel proud to be a part of Canada.
