Canada’s Role as Peacekeeper’s
Mr. Webb Grade 10 Student: Hayley Chesson
In my opinion Canada plays a large role in providing peace for countries all around
the world. Today I will explain the importance of Canada’s role as a Peacekeeper. I will
provide my information by briefly stating my thoughts in 3 paragraphs. Starting by
mentioning Canada’s daily participation, the financing they put in this force, and finally
the future of Peacekeeping as it continues to grow.
Canada contributes greatly to the UN’s role in peace operations. Approximately
125,000 of Canadian men have served in 50 UN missions. To this day, our soldiers are
active in countries knowingly putting there lives in danger and sharing they’re skills by
helping thousands of people who are incapable of this power. Canada has been a leader
in peace operations since the development of peacekeeping by Lester Pearson during
the Suez Crisis in 1956. Everyday, Canada contributes highly trained civilian, military,
and police personnel to the operations. As of March 2007, Canada was ranked 59th out
of 114 countries in terms of military and police contributions to UN operations.
Numbers of states are recognizing what Canada always acknowledged, that
peacekeeping is beneficial to the World. Within the years Canada’s role in UN
peacekeeping has not been without sacrifice. Canada has the 2nd largest peacekeeping
fatality with 114 fatalities, but we continue to honor those who had contributed and
continue to do so. Canada is known throughout the world for their excellent service of

In conclusion I have explained in detail the 3 main reasons why Canada is a good peacekeeper. I showed my knowledge through researching Canada’s daily participation, the financing they put in this force, and the future of Peacekeeping as it continues to grow. Canada puts a lot of effort, money, and time into being peacekeepers. This force is something to look forward to! As a Canadian it is setting an amazing reputation on our country and making the world a better place. Without Canada’s help the peace of today and the future wouldn’t be the same. Having Canada as a Peacekeeper is making the world become a much more peaceful and safe place for everybody.
The years since the Battle of Vimy Ridge may have passed quickly, but the legacy of the Canadians whose accomplishments were great in that pivotal First World War battle lives on. Many people claim to this day that Canada came of age as a country on those hard April days in 1917. At first, through the meticulous planning of the battle, the world saw a nation capable of working together and making decisions as a team. Afterwards, with the range of technical and tactical innovations involved in the attack, the world saw a strong nation unafraid to protect and defend. In the end, through great sacrifice the world bore witness to the birth of the Canadian legacy.
One of Canada’s largest military endeavors was the battle of Vimy Ridge during World War One. It was a fierce battle between Germans and Canadians. Canada was trying to take over the German controlled ridge, which ran from northwest to southwest between Lens and Arras, France. Its highest point was 145 feet above sea level, which was exceptionally helpful in battle because of the very flat landscape. Already over 200,000 men had fallen at Vimy, all desperately trying to take or defend this important and strategic ridge. As a result of its success in taking the ridge, Canada gained a lot more than just the strategic point. Canada was united as a nation, and the victory changed the way other counties viewed them. Canadians no longer viewed their soldiers as merely an extension of allied forces; they now viewed their troops as an independent and unified entity.

Canada was influential in the development of NATO; it had been a member of NATO since it was founded in 1949. The purpose of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was to unify the western allies and strengthen the military as a reaction to a possible threat from the Soviet Union and its allies. In 1949 many countries signed a contract to be part of the organization including: Belgium, Great Britain, Italy, Iceland, Luxembourg, United States, Canada, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Portugal.² Canada gained benefits from being part of NATO such as the ability to have a say in alliance policy, and now Canada would be able to “deal with the US on a multilateral context.” ¹ NATO also provided safety for Canada from the potential aggression of the Soviet Union. Canada’s armed forces were the most engaged, and active responsive armed forces within NATO. Canada’s priority in NATO was to ensure that all allies remain modern and are able to face the threats during the time period.
Canada also became a leader internationally as well. With such an enormous military contribution during the war, other countries began to recognize the success of Canada. People wanted to know more about Canada. Consequently, the war advanced Canada’s sense of identity.

Canada is putting forth time, effort, and money, to improve the living conditions of those in Afghanistan and helping them build a sustainable, peaceful life that they can carry out for years to come. Canada is known by outsiders to be a very peaceful country. But if you ask any Canadian, they will tell you that is unfortunately not the case. There is a large ongoing conflict between Canadians. The conflict is between the French and the English, or more specifically between Quebec and the rest of Canada. As a result of this conflict, along with some wrongdoing and propaganda.

All aspects of Canada were impacted and changed because of this war. The war was such a horrific event but out of the horrific event a great country grew and prospered. Now Canada wonders, would Canada be who it is today if this war didn’t occur?
Today Canada and the United States are major trading partners, allies, and two neighboring countries with a long history of cooperation with each other. But is it possible for Canada to protect its independence and culture living next door to the country so powerful and rich as the United States. Since the Canadian confederation, Canada started developing relations with the U.S. As the years passed by, Canada began to relay on the United States in the national defense. Many Canadians think that the military, political and economical dependence would not make a difference to their daily life. But today more then even Canadian culture is affected by the American influence. Media, American artists, economic dependence, American propaganda and political pressure from the United States is making Canada too Americanized. All of these factors reflect on the social life of ordinary Canadians threatening the heritage and the traditions that define Canada as independent country.

Was Canada a warrior or a peacekeeper during the Post War Period? Canada is a member of UN which is an international organization that maintains peace around the world. Although, Canada has played a role as warrior in some cases, such as in the War in Afghanistan, but we’ve mostly played our roles in wars as a peacekeeper. The Rwandan Genocide is a prime example because Canada tried to help stop the bloodshed between the Hutus and the Tutsis. In the Bosnian War Canada and the UN created camps to protect civilians who were trapped in the war. And in the Suez Crisis, Canada’s very own Lester B. Pearson help stop the conflict between the Egyptians and the British/French.
Canada has played a vital role in international relations for the majority of its 144 year history since the signing of Confederation in 1867. Canada first participated in World War I, then World War II in 1939-1945. Following World War II, Canada was also involved in the Korean War. Canada has been primarily a peacekeeping nation. There are many questions people ask when a high income country goes to help a lower income nation such as Afghanistan.
Canada is known for its natural resources and scenic wonders, such as the beautiful Niagara Falls, the great mountains and different climates. Canada is one of the best countries. to live, because of many factors: life expectancy, healthcare and GDP. leading in comparison to many other countries. Life expectancy is the most important reason that makes Canada a good place.
