Many students were curious on the surge of law enforcement that were patrolling the streets of Sacramento on August 30th. On that afternoon, reports confirm that two California Highway Patrol officers and a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department deputy were shot on 2600 block of Auburn Boulevard. Deputy Robert French suffered fatal injuries in the shootout and died on the way to the hospital at the age of 52. Robert was a 21-year veteran to the force, and has worked as a training officer in the north area patrol unit. The other two California Highway Patrol officers still remain hospitalized. Three suspects in totals have been arrested in connection with the incident. This unfortunate series of events began at the Ramada Inn in the 2600 block
On February 23, 1993, James Swann began his attacks on Washington, D.C area. His first attack occurred on Holmead Place NW. He stuck his 20 gauge shotgun out of the driver side window and started to shoot at a woman walking home. She escaped without being shot. The same night about 15 minutes later on 1400 block of Oak Street NW, a 22 year old man was shot in the face and was partially blinded. His shooting was dismissed because of objectivity. On February 26, 1993, three days following the first shooting a man burst in a barbershop and murdered a customer with his shotgun. This was James Swann’s first slaying. Once again, police brushed the case off assuming it was drug related. James too a very brief rest from his crimes, however, on March 4, 1993, he returned to Washington and his victim was a 43 year old man walking down the street. He was shot in the head, but to be consistent the police assumed it was drug related. Police did not take the previous shootings serious until the drive by shootings continued in an upscale neighborhood in Mount Pleas...
The Ohio Highway State Patrol has a long history of enforcing laws and keeping the wellness and safety of all Ohioans everywhere. In conclusion, the Kent State shooting was a tragedy that has never really had anyone held responsible. Thirty-eight years later, “Official investigations as to exactly what happened at Kent State were inconclusive.” The days preceding the shootings, the students burned down the ROTC building, protested on the commons, and threw rubbish at police officers. The violent actions of the students put the law enforcement officials and National Guardsmen around them on edge. On the other side, the Guardsmen arrived in full combat gear to put down unarmed college students. There was no reason for the soldiers to fire at the students that were hundreds of feet away from them. Whether one of the soldiers fired in a moment of panic or if they were order to commence shooting may never be known.
A) The major concepts/issues in the article, "Sacramento Mayor Promises Police Reforms After Video of Fatal Shooting Made Public" by Anita Chabria is police brutality, which calls for immediate and major reform when it comes to policing among law enforcement agencies. The videos that were released by Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento Bee show various angles of the scene. The victim Joseph Mann is a 50 year old black man who was seen by residents to be carrying a weapon, either a gun, knife, or both. In the video, he is displaying erratic behavior and is holding a knife, though the footage is not quite clear. Dispatcher told the officers that Mann was armed with a gun and a knife. However, police never found one and residents
On New Year’s Day 2009, the police were called because a fight broke out on a train in Oakland, California. Oscar Grant and some of his friends were pulled off the train by former cop Johannes Mehserle. Grant struggled some with the officers while being arrested, but then he was restrained. Oscar Grant was lying on the platform when Johannes Mehserle shot him around 2 am. Granted had both hands behind his back and he was also unarmed when he was shot (Bulwa). The shooting made national headlines because bystanders videotaped it. These videos went viral and they made their way to the news (Cater).
Police officers should not be shooting their own children! Especially, just for a vodka replacement. It is just so unnecessary. Police officer Leuser shoots his own son after son switches his vodka with water. Son remains in hospital in critical condition and is in need of many surgeries. All of this happened to the poor boy because of his innocent error in his life. The worst thing is that it was caused by a police officer. Police officers are the ones that are supposed to be stopping crime, not making it. Police officer Leuser’s act is disrespectful to the community. No, officer should be in duty after doing such a fatal thing. The police officer should spend all his life in prison after hurting his own son. He did not have any compassion
Everyday law enforcement personal have the possibility to face dangerous events in their daily duties. In performing such duties a police officer could come by a seemingly ordinary task, and in a blink of an eye the event can turn threatening and possible deadly. When or if this happens to an officer they won’t have
Police shootings occur all over the world but are a huge problem within the United States. We continue to hear more and more about them. These shootings are making headlines. Front page news it seems almost weekly. All the shootings go one of two ways.
One of the most eye opening school shootings was on April 20, 1999 in Littleton, Colorado. Thirteen students were killed and twenty wounded in the middle of the day while attending school at Columbine High School. Two armed students opened fire just outside the building, then moved inside and gunned down more students and faculty members. This rampage lasting for just under 45 minutes. The students then turned the guns on themselves and ended their lives. The police did not show up in a reasonable time, which lead families to file lawsuits against the police department and the school. There was only one resource officer in the high school, during this time. He was located in the parking lot to watch kids drive in and out. One of the parents of the victims said, "There was no one in that school that had a gun other than the two killers, and ...
In the world of policing, it seems, here are certainly more glamorous jobs than dispatch. Most, if not all, Justice students are intending on a career in patrol, or drug enforcement, maybe they want to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. On a lower level, when one thinks of policing, their mind may drift to fast paced, high energy, law enforcement dramas dispatch would on the surface seem to be the antithesis of this. A bunch of people, sitting in a room answering calls all day. That person would, however, be incredibly wrong. Without dispatch, law enforcement as we know it today would not exist.
I participated in a police ride-along with the Fairfax County Police Department on October 30th. I chose the Fair Oaks District Station for the ride since my home falls within that particular district’s boundaries. At 8 p.m., I was introduced to Officer Crutchman; the police officer I would be accompanying for the night. We headed out after a brief overview of some safety rules and expectations. Over the course of the shift I was able to observe many of the routine duties of a FCPO such as responding to calls, setting speed traps, performing traffic stops, assisting fellow officers, and patrolling neighborhoods and public parks. Officer Crutchman provided valuable insight into police work, beyond the procedural knowledge that Mason classes
Sacramento Police Department’s twitter account has 36.3 followers and Los Rios police department has 79 follower (twitter.com). These tweets and hashtags are not only benefiting civilians but also police officers. The police are benefiting off of social media posts by civilians speaking up and giving clues and tips toward crimes. On September 3, 2015 Sacramento City College was part of a school shooting were one man was killed and two people were injured. The school was patrolled by police and put on lock down. During this time, students of the other Los Rios colleges were unaware of what was occurring. I was in class why this tragic incident occurred. Sacramento Police tweeted ever 10 to 15 minutes about this shooting that allowed other students to feel safe and informed of what was happening around them. Police also use social media in a positive way rather than also in a negative
At the same time, Los Angeles police units were experiencing difficulties in handling situations in which riots and snipers were terrorizing basic police units. In response to these difficulties, LAPD officer John Nelson presented the concept of a squad which was specially trained to handle such situations to Inspector Darryl F. Gates. Gates approved the concept of a "highly disciplined" ...
Crime is everywhere and it takes a special group or team of people to stop it, or make crime less tempting to do. The main job of police and security officers is to maintain justice, order and peace. In order to keep peace police officers must go through an academy that will prepare them for most situations that they will have to face later on in their career. Some situations require a more intense way to solve a problem such as using force or putting the perpetrator in fear so they will give in to what the police are asking. In some cases the peretrator(s) are too volatile or risky for the basic trained police officer, so the swat team must be used. The swat team unit or “special weapons and tactics” is a higher trained police force. It is a select group of officers that have been through more training and more experience than the average cop. Without the police or security civilians may not feel as safe as they do now when they are walking in the streets or going to a public event. For the people who want to be part of such a unit and are willing to put people before themselves will need to know what it takes to be a police officer.
The success of a law enforcement agency is the efficient police officers on patrol and their bond with the community. There are many ways an officer executes his patrol and some are more common than others. Foot patrol, vehicular patrol, bicycle patrol, mounted horse patrol, motorcycle patrol, and air patrol are the multitude of ways officers patrol the community.
