t’s the night before your big "end of the year" test and you are trying to study. Once you realize it is 1 am and you are still studying you decide to get something to drink to help boost your energy level. What do you think this drink is mostly going to be? Is it tea? Is it soda? Why do those drinks help us stay awake with that extra "energy boost"? The answer is caffeine. Caffeine is in a lot of things we eat and drink every day and you may not even realize it. It's important to be aware of what ingredients are in things you consume. Caffeine is a huge part of our daily lives and our intake often reflects our health status. Caffeine is a drug that is naturally produced in the leaves and seeds of many plants. It's produced artificially and added to certain foods. It is defined as a drug because it simulates the central nervous system, causing increased alertness. Caffeine gives many people a temporary energy boost and elevates mood. It is used in many foods and beverages such as tea, coffee, soft drinks, chocolate, pain relievers, and many other medications. Teens usually get caffeine from soft drinks or energy drinks whereas adults normally get it from tea or coffee. I will begin by discussing the few positive affects of caffeine. Caffeine does help you wake up and feel more alert and it has been shown to increase attention spans. This is a beneficial effect for people who are driving long distances and for people who are doing tedious work. Calling this a health benefit may be stretching it, though staying awake while you are driving a car definitely contributes to your well-being! Caffeine also contains antioxidants, which have been shown to have cancer prevention qualities. It also reduces the chances of getting Alzheimer's disease.
