McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park

One of the most beautiful parks in California is located in Burney, at the foot of the Cascade Mountains, just east of the Shasta National Forest and about 50 miles east of Redding California. It is the second oldest park in the California state park system and contains one of the area's most spectacular natural wonders: Burney Falls. But there is more than just the falls for vacationers to experience here. In fact, the park boasts 910 acres of forest and five miles of streamside and lake shoreline, including a portion of Lake Britton. McArthur-Burney Falls offers camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and water sports.

Visitors Center
Located just beyond the south entrance to the park is the visitors center and ranger station. Here you can find maps to trails, information about camping, fishing and boating, and information about the flora and fauna to be found within the park. This is a good place to start your visit, get oriented, and plan your day.

Recreation within the Park
Burney Falls
The park's major attraction is the 129-foot Burney Falls, which is fed by Burney Creek and is considered to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the United States and the most beautiful in California. Because of their geological formations and position, the falls appear as if they are a continuous wall of streaming water. Additional water is added to the falls from naturally-occurring underground springs and when the water from the springs meets the water from the creek, a mist-filled basin is created, making the falls even more spectacular. 100 million gallons of water flow through the falls every day.

For children, the park offers a number of interactive programs, many run by rangers, including shows on campfire safety, the history of the area and a presentation about the Old Station forest fire of 1989. The park also offers a junior rangers program, during which children under 13 can experience a day in the life of a park ranger.
