At the onset of the book, the story is introduced as John H. Watson’s recounting of his times. He tells us that he was a doctor working in the British army. His attachment was moved to Afghanistan to fight in the second Afghan war when he joined, where he was later injured. His injury left him unable to continue fighting, and made it unlikely he could do much anymore. He then is returned to England, looking for someplace to live. He didn’t have much to his name, so living in London was nearly impossible, that is until his friend Stamford had told him he was the second person looking for accommodations with a roommate. Stamford tells John about a man whom he knows, and explains his eccentricities and his want of a person to split
