In Lake Braddock, every gold day we have Bruin Block, which is a “mandatory” class that is used as study hall. It is a fundamental class in most high schools today and there is a good reason for a class similar to Bruin Block or study hall. But as soon as their is a two hour delay or a early release the school is quick to cancel it. Lake Braddock says it is a very important class and it is because it can help a lot of students. Bruin Block shouldn’t be canceled when there is a delay or early release. Lake Braddock says Bruin Block is a mandatory class. This means if you miss the class you will be marked absent and it will show up in the attendance sheet. If you miss too many classes the attendance board will have to have a talk with you and your parents in order to fix the problem. So if the class is mandatory, then why do they cancel it every chance they get? The school is contradicting themselves saying that the class is mandatory but then they cancel the “mandatory class when a delay or early release. …show more content…
If a student is absent or missed a class Bruin Block is how the students catches up on missed class work. They can go to the teacher and get all the work they missed and ask questions in order to catch up. Bruin Block is also used to take a second chance assessment. If a student doesn’t do as well as they liked on the test they can go get help to retake the test. For students that work after school maybe they don’t have enough time to finish a homework assignment. Bruin Block is a good time for them to do that homework. If they cancel the class, students lose this opportunity to make up all the class
As I wearily sat in my seat, writing an essay on the importance of electricity in the modern world, I caught myself glancing repeatedly at the clock that was so carefully perched above the teacher’s desk. “Ten minutes, only ten more minutes left until school is over and I get to go home!” I told myself. In most schools, the average school day is about eight hours long. Eight hours of continuously sitting in a chair taking notes during lectures, doing classwork, projects, etc. During these eight hours of school, students deserve a short, outdoor break in which they can isolate themselves from the stress of working all day and just relax. Studies have shown that people who take short breaks throughout the day to do light, outdoor breaks are more productive than those who do not. A short, outdoor break will benefit students due to the fact that students will have time to relax; students will be able to focus more, concentrate, and be more productive; and teachers will have more time to prepare for the next class coming.
For centuries now, gangs have been all over America, causing violence and ruining the youths opportunities. Children's lives can be ruined joining a gang leading into violence and substance abuse. From the earlier 20th Century, to now, gangs have been an issue in low income cities and neighborhoods. In Jacob Saenz’s poem, “Evolution of My Block”, written in 1982, Saenz describes to the readers how the gang life was in his neighborhood and on his block. Throughout the poem, he talks about the pressure of gangs and how they functioned. His poem speaks more than what is actually said and hides many of his thoughts through the words and rhymes. The poem conveys many messages and specific aspects which have to deal with culture and race. The narrator
When students fail to hand in assignments or when a child acts up in class, lots say it both as a way of punishing for bad behavior or as a way to carry out a few extra minutes of learning time in a packed day.
Making courses mandatory only lowers the GPA of that student if they were to do poorly. Graff is evidence himself when he states, “Until I entered college, I hated books and cared only for sports” (1). He was like most kids today, uninterested in learning, but later became a college professor. If Graff did well, I'm sure kids in his position would succeed too. If we let students have a longer leash, hopefully they will be mature enough to pick the topics they are interested in, and later on might help them in a career with those interests. Students should be allowed to choose the classes in which will lead them to pursuing the career with them. With the help of guidance and career counselors, students would be able to find what interests them, and pursue that field. It’s up to the school to make classes mandatory, but the mandatory classes should be that of what a student would use on a daily
According to Bergen-Belsen, “Approximately 50,000 people died in the Bergen-Belsen camp complex. Among them was Anne Frank, the most well known child diarist of the Holocaust era.” Bergen-Belsen was a concentration camp located in the towns Bergen and Belsen in Germany. Thousands and thousands of Jews died at this concentration camp. The living conditions poor, disease spread, and Jews were filthy and unsanitary.
Former VSU President William McKinney adjusted the academic calendar by reinstating Fall Break and eliminating Dead Day. He knew that the constant debate of whether or not to have the two items had been prolonged enough. Dr. McKinney said he believed that his decision “serves the best interest of most Valdosta State students, faculty, and staff” (Edwards, “Dead Day Gone”). While the elimination of Dead Day should have benefited everyone the students didn’t benefit as much as the teachers, so Dead Day should be reinstated to allow students an extra day before finals to study and relax.
Whitney Houston and Bobbi Brown are seemingly distinct names in being award-winning musicians and have entertained us for generations, but their daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, lived her life in the shadows of her parent’s success. Bobbi Kristina Brown, who was an only child from Whitney Houston and Bobbi Brown, died the same way her mother, Whitney Houston did. Did Whitney Houston’s abuse of drugs influence Bobbi Kristina’s ideology of coping with depression? My research indicates that: first, Bobbi Kristina’s death was connected to her mother’s death. Secondly, how depression might have played a part in her sudden death and thirdly, Bobbi Kristina Brown’s abuse of drugs, leading to her death.
We chose our topic on Blackbeard the pirate because pirates are a prevalent part of the culture along South Carolina’s coast. What we read about Blackbeard really fit this year’s National History Day theme. We then looked to his legacy in South Carolina and thought about how he is seen and remembered in modern day South Carolina. Another reason for why we chose our topic is that Blackbeard is a very interesting part of history, so we thought that people would be rather interested in learning about an infamous pirate, and bring to light one of the most ambitious actions in his career as a pirate.
Every war has its statistics and in WWII the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen was no different. In the first few months that Bergen-Belsen was established 35,000 prisoners died. At the end of July 1944 there were 7,300, December 1944 15,000, February 1945 22,000 and by April more than 60,000 prisoners. In the Bergen-Belsen Special Camp 2,400 people here were transferred to Auschwitz and immediately shot, gassed and killed, while 350 more suffered in similar ways. Also in the Hungarian camp- Ungarnlager 1,000 sick prisoners came from the Dora camp and after liberation only 57 of the original prisoners had survived. March of 1945 was a devastating month, in which 18,168 people perished. From January to April 1945 35,000 deaths occurred. At the time of liberation 60,000 prisoners were rescued but all 60,000 were in critical condition. There were thousands of bodies scattered across the camp; bare bodies, starved to death, laying in
While switching to a year-round schedule does not always guarantee students the best teachers or learning environment, the educational benefits offered in a year-round school system give students more options in their education. For example, students who fail a class could possibly retake it during one of the many extended breaks throughout the year, which could help them catch up to their peers and make sure they do not fall behind (Schofield 15). Not only would students benefit from making up classes during breaks, but making sure they graduate on time or even early could also decrease taxpayer spending because students would spend less time in school. Others claim the cost of more teachers and air-conditioning (especially during summer) will cancel out or even exceed the savings on buildings and supplies (Schofield 9). Studies have proved the contrary, that savings on insurance, buildings, school supplies and buses heavily outweigh the added costs of hiring more teachers and air-conditioning school buildings 12 months a year (Rodgers
decision on their own. This does not only make for unwisely spent funds, but also unhappy students who are therfore not going appreciate a forced class.
For the lost day, spread out over the four days, comes about just in around 10 additional minutes for each class period. It is additionally brought up that students have additional time to finish homework and do ventures over the long weekend. With online training being underlined by states and regions, the additional weekday would take this into consideration. Other conceivable advantages incorporate an increase in confidence and reduction in non-attendance, by both staff and students. Furthermore, folks at last have room schedule-wise to make arrangements for their kids that will not interrupt with school. They can also take long-weekend family outings, or go to different occasions that do not affect time away from school.
Nowadays, universities are open place for all people. More and more educational chances have been created for those who want to acquire knowledge from colleges and universities. While registering for a college course seems to be no longer complicated, there still remains an obstacle that has been triggered so much controversy in academic environment: mandatory attendance policy. This policy, which is imposed by some schools or some professors, requires that college student must attend class regularly enough or their exam papers will be extracted some attendance points (that usually count for about 15 or 20 percent of the total grade evaluation). In my opinion, this policy is useless and burdensome to many people involved. University students should be free in choosing which classes to attend.
One extra day of school cuts into precious relaxation time of students and teachers alike.
Another major reason that students responded is that they had too much freedom and not enough rules. In other words, they feel that they were able to do whatever they wanted. Therefore, they missed class whenever they pleased because they taught it was not important and that nobody would care. Teachers and school administrators need to be strict regarding to attendance. Students need to see that it is really important to attend school everyday so that they attend in a regular basis. The last major reason that students drop out school is that they fail in school and they give up. According to the report, students said that no one would help them when they were having trouble with something. They did not get any support from most of their teachers so they give up and drop out of school. I think that students who are failing a class are the ones that need more support since they tend to frustrate when they do not understand something. Tutoring sessions and help from the teacher it is very important to help students who are struggling with the material. In this way, students will find the material a little bit
