The TV is turned on at 8:30pm on a Tuesday evening. What is playing? Usually, a mix of different shows spattered across the many different stations vying to hold the 1# spot during the TV schedule window, known as “Prime Time.” A person may think that during this time, a plethora of television shows choices are available to him or her. But, is that choice really up to them? TV programming, especially during Prime Time, is highly researched and organized in order to garner as much viewership as possible. Components like, age, race, income, and interest, are all considered in the creation of a television show and play a vital role concerning where and when a show is placed on the TV schedule. Two networks, FOX, a broadcast network, and TBS, a cable network, use this kind of information to create program content, target certain audiences, and organize commercial lineup for the hit shows, respectively, Glee and the Big Bang Theory.
Today, the FOX network is often criticized for its counter-popular political stance in the news, but its cutting edge TV programs keep the network alive. One of FOX’s current hit programs is Glee, debuting in 2009. Glee is a show that is centered on the lives of students and teachers involved in a high school Glee/Show choir club. The purpose of Glee is to display struggles that teens and sometimes adults go through; the show is known for its controversial content. The writing of the program displays this controversy through common problems, multiplied by gossipy dramas, typical in the high school sociosphere. TBBT targets intelligent, young men, racial specification is not a necessary choice for this audience. Concerning the age demographic, Glee pulls in a few more age ranges in addition to the age range of its target audience. The larger age range allows for a more diverse, selection of commercial content. TBBT is very direct with its age range as it tries to pull its “specified” viewers in with specific commercial content and seamless episode transitions. Comparing these two programs reveals the difficult challenges presented to broadcast and cable networks concerning TV organization, exposing the specific and objective market that exists beyond the external appearance of television programming.
The Glee has been one of the most popular sitcoms in recent years. It was identified as a gay-friendly show on the mainstream TV station. The show breaks the boundaries and stereotypes that have been set and present audience with the real world of gay and lesbian. More specifically, the unique gay/lesbian characters representation in the show not only allows heterosexual people to have their finger on the pulse of homosexual culture but also resonates the homosexual audience.
Television has always been an industry whose profit has always been gained through ads. But in chapter 2 of Jason Mittell’s book, Television and American Culture, Mittell argues that the rise of the profit-driven advertising television model can be traced back through American television history, and that the rise of the profit-driven advertising model of television actually helped to mold American culture both from a historical standpoint and from a social standpoint.
Reality shows sent a much-needed lifeline to the television networks industry. These shows have found a new way to bring much needed viewers, and even more important they brought in much needed money. The money came rolling into CBS after premiering Survivor, which brought in a profit of around $30,000,000 to the network. Even though Survivor is the must costly reality show, costing close to one million dollars to produce and hour of programming. In comparison to other shows, which cost far more like CBS’s series “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” which cost over 1.6 million to produce per hour. With the amount of money coming in such large sums to networks have had to close monitor how much is being spent. Clearly’ the reality shows have brought in much needed assets to the flattering television networks.
“What’s ruining television today are those big productions – It’s the fairies who are going to ruin show business.” For some, this quote from The Jack Paar Show may seem unsettling. In the midst of a Supreme Court that has recently extended even more rights to a community so harshly oppressed, it is shocking to think that just fifty years ago, thoughts like this represented the majority opinion. Since its start, the television industry has been criticized for perpetuating myths and stereotypes about African-Americans through characterizations, story lines, and plots. The situation comedy has been the area that has seemed to draw the most criticism, analysis, and disapproval for stereotyping. From Sanford and Son and The Jefferson’s in the 1970s to The Cosby Show (1984) and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the 1990s, sitcoms featuring black casts and characters have always been controversial. However, their significance upon our American culture cannot be disregarded. During the 1950s and 1960s, 97% of the families were Caucasian. In the first five years of the 1990s, nearly 14% of the television families were African-American (Bryant 2001). These statistics obviously show the substantial impact our American culture has had on African-American television families.
How much of television is comprised of real life? By examining one show within its context, one can find the answer. Reality is reflected in the themes; rhetorical strategies; and audience, importance, and popularity. By examining the situational comedy series: Drake and Josh, a popular teen show from 2004, it is possible to see how reality shapes television. Drake and Josh is centered around two brothers in San Diego, California: Drake and Josh. Drake is portrayed as the suave, charming, bad boy in a band. He gets all the girls, leaving Josh in the dust. Josh is a nerdy brainiac, who has an unhealthy infatuation with Oprah Winfrey. They also have a meteorologist father and a kooky mother. Plus, a younger sister who painfully pranks them in

The media has been a part of the daily life of the American people for the longest time, because of this fact, the media influences the decisions and views of how people should live. One big part of the media that tends to start to develop a sense of how the day-to-day American should live is Disney. Since kids are the main source of Disney’s billion dollar industry children have become an important dimension of the social theory (Giroux 1999: 65). “Within this context, television emerges as a consumer-oriented medium that reflects advertisers’ desire to reach a young, upscale, and primarily White audience” (Goodale1999; Henderson and Baldasty 2003: 100). As a result other races and ethnic groups other than white Americans are often put aside when it comes to the social media view of how Americans should live.
Electronic media content can be viewed differently according to personal opinions, but the First Amendment Rights of the United States Constitution lay the foundation for the legal system that is to be followed. These rights form a guide that help citizens have a stronger grasp on what is and isn’t acceptable within the eye of the law. Narrowing down to electronic media content, there has been a rise of tension involving first amendment rights of content regulations. The spectrum scarcity rationale has made it possible to control licensing schemes, along with direct content control to make sure rules are being followed according to the First Amendment. The differences between cable TV versus broadcasting are similar, yet contrasting.
Glee: Defying the Mainstream The herd will take care of it” (Glee). This is not a reference to cattle but rather a reference to high school students; this quote was said by a teacher on the show Glee, indicating that students enforce the status quo. Ironically, this show does the opposite. The episode “Pilot” from the show Glee by Ryan Murphy is unique for television shows because it reverses the stereotypical views of society, and this essay will analyze it by summarizing the show, applying the Rhetorical Method and the Gender & Sexuality Method, discussing an outside source to further explain the creators motives regarding the show, and evaluating the text as a whole.
American children, on average, spend more time watching television programs than they do engaging with adults, siblings, or attending school (Feldman, Coats, & Spielman, 1996). This finding introduces the challenge for big networks to use television to positively guide children’s social learning while they are home from school. Studies have shown that even a brief exposure to television can produce positive effects on learning during childhood (Rice and Woodsmall, 1998), and television programming can also positively influence pro-social behaviors and gender-role concepts (Forge & Phemister, 1987, Mares & Woodward, 2001, O’Bryant & Corder-Bolz, 1978 and Signorelli, 2001). Furthermore, many of the existing educational programs directed at young children aim to influence attitudes relating to racial prejudice (Persson & Musher-Eizenman, 2003). If mainstream networks had psychological research to back up their efforts, then television for children could be as socially awakening as it is relaxing.

“A Cultural Approach to Television Genre Theory” argues that the application of film and literary genre theory do not fully translate when analyzing television, because of “the specific industry and audience practices unique to television, or for the mixture of fictional and nonfictional programming that constitutes the lineup on nearly every TV channel. 2” The goal of media genre studies, Mittell asserts, is to understand how media is arranged within the contexts of production and reception, and how media work to create our vision of the world.
