“This Dark Endeavour” by Kenneth Oppel is a prequel to the classic “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley. The story follows a Young Victor Frankenstein and his journey to find the elixir of life. With the help of his friends Elizabeth lavenza and Henry Clerval, Victor hopes to create this elixir to save his twin brother from a deadly illness. Kenneth Oppel is using this story to say that one should keep tryings, and that one should never give up on their goals.

Victor Frankenstein is a 16 year old boy who enjoys his life in Geneva. His family includes: his mother, father, distant cousin and his brothers, the most important being his twin. His twin brother Konrad is much more charismatic, he is loved by all and has won over the heart of Elizabeth, their distant cousin. On a normal sunny day the Victor, his brother and Elizabeth stumble upon a secret library that holds books of alchemy. While searching through the books, they find the elixir of life. Victor and his crew set out for geneva to find this man. When they find Polidori he tells them that they will have to gather all of the materials for the elixir, sending them on treacherous missions through dangerous places. With the determination to save his brother and to prove that he is good at something, Victor continues his quest until it’s end.

“This Dark Endeavour” by Kenneth Oppel shows that even if there are factors that make your goal harder to reach, one should keep trying so that they might achieve it in the end. This story is a prequel to the classic “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley, in which the old Victor Frankenstein creates a creature from his nightmares.
