Dante Lombardi Haller Period 6 18 August 2014 1984 In the novel “1984” the author, George Orwell, shows us what he thinks the future will be like. The book starts off on a cold April day in 1984 Oceania, the totalitarian superpower in post World War II Europe. Winston Smith, a records editor at the Ministry of Truth, brings himself home to Victory Mansions for lunch. Very depressed and angry, Winston starts a diary of his rebellious thoughts, which if found, will result in his death. For the sake of his own life, Winston only writes when safe from the view of the many surveying telescreens. When at work, Winston starts to become curious about a brunette named Julia, a machine-operator. Both of these places far away from any surveillance, or so they thought. As Winston and Julia’s love deepens, Winston’s views on the government change. He starts to realize the manipulation, history changing, and sketchiness of the government. Eventually, Winston is brought to join the Brotherhood, a revolutionary group that goes against the government. Eventually, Winston makes contact with another worker named O’Brien, who Winston thinks is a member of the Brotherhood , but who is secretly part of the Thought Police and is trying to trick Winston. O’Brien gives Winston a copy of “The Book” a resistance piece that states the reason for the resistance. Unfortunately for Winston he never gets to read the book, but is apprehended by the Thought Police. Turns out their “secret’ hiding place wasn’t so secret. The couple is brought to the Ministry of Love, where criminals and opponents of the Party are tortured and brainwashed before they are released. O’Brien is in control of torturing Winston and does not hold back. Months later, Winston is sent to Room 101. A place where a person’s worst fears are exploited and used
