Did you know that Breast Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 236,968 women in 2014 were diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Both my Mother and Grandmother were diagnosed with Breast Cancer. As a son and grandson of women with Breast Cancer, this lead me to do more research on the topic. By a show of hands, how many of you know of a person that was diagnosed with Breast Cancer? Today I’ll be talking about the information that I have learned about Breast Cancer. In the book “Breast Cancer: Real Questions, Real Answers” a number of different treatments are discussed. Many patients will take the first step and my have the Breast cancer surgically removed. This is most common when the Breast Cancer is in the early stages and has not spread throughout the body. There are two very common surgeries that can be done. These two surgeries are called a lumpectomy and mastectomy. In the book “Breast Cancer: Real Questions, Real Answers” a lumpectomy is the removal of the lump/cancer that is located in the breast. A mastectomy is when the whole breast is removed from the body. When the Breast Cancer is more advanced or has spread throughout the body, there are other options that patients may seek. The two main treatments include radiation and chemotherapy. The authors of the book “Breast Cancer: Real Questions, Real Answers” describe radiation as a cancer treatment that uses a x-ray to break apart the cancer cells. Chemotherapy is described as medicine that is given to a cancer patient to kill the cancer cells throughout the body.
