“When many educated or professional people leave a particular place or even a profession and move to a different one that gives them better pay, more benefits, and better living conditions is known as the brain drain” (Brain Drain, n.d., pg 1). The brain drain is becoming a huge problem in rural areas all across the nation, with so many people making the individual decision to leave the rural area, because they are doing what they think is best for themselves. Many will wonder, is it in there best interest or how will it effect the community. Trying to find a job in the countryside means facing the triple threat. The triple threat is a failing farm and factory-based economy, rising unemployment, and shrinking wages and benefits (Carr & Kefalas, 2009). Why would one want to stay in an area that has fewer jobs, less pay, and less benefits? This is a huge reason why so many individuals are leaving the rural area, there is nothing keeping them to stay. As stated earlier, there are many patterns we can see in terms who decides to leave the rural area and who decides to stay in the rural area. For those who tend to leave the rural area, do so for many reasons. Patterns show that most people are leaving for better paying jobs, benefits, more opportunities, and a better life style (Carr & Kefalas, 2009). Many of these people don’t believe there is a place for them to work if they are not interested in agriculture and or farming. Which in some cases is true, but it is becoming this way because all of these young educated people are leaving and no one is starting up new businesses that would provide more jobs for others. The Great Migration started in 1910 and continued through 1930. It was a period in time which saw 1.6 million African Americans relocate from the southern states to the northern states(AAME). There are four main which contributed to this occurring. The first was better and more skilled job opportunities available in the north. Many blacks were not allowed to work or hold high paying jobs in the South. The second was the oppression of African Americans in the South. They depict the issues that arise when the youth leaves in search of bigger things that are outside of the small towns. Throughout the article, the issues of change in small towns is addressed and emphasized as a catastrophe for the future of these towns. The great migration was an event that seemed as if it was unstoppable and that it was going to happen. In the South African American’s faced racial discrimination, sharecropping, bad working conditions, low wages, racial segregation and political detriments. This is all supported by documents 1-4. The first mass wave of immigration to the United Sates started in 1820. The people that came to the United States were from Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Bohemia, Ireland, and a small number of Chinese. Roughly fifteen million people emigrated from 1820 to 1880. There were three main causes for the mass immigration. There was the Revolutions in Europe, mainly in Germany. Then there was the 1848 California Gold Rush. The third reason for this immigration was the end of the Mexican-American War. The two main groups that immigrated to the United States were Germans and the Irish, as a result of the Revolutions in Europe.

There are many effects of migration, some good and some bad, but the main concern is how the refugees affect the society as a whole. As I started out researching for the paper, I realized that most importantly, data would need to be collected comparing the educational opportunities and achievement of the rural youth and those of urban youth. For instance, high school grades and SAT scores could be compared, as well as college applications and attendance. Beyond this, the actual school systems of rural and urban areas would be compared - the differences in funding, ideology, resources, etc., would grant insight into the students’ experiences and goals there.
Due to rural-urban migration, there has been increasing levels of poverty and depopulation in rural areas. This is one of the reasons why the government has seen it as necessary and made it a priority to improve the lives of the people who live in rural areas. Rural development is about enabling people in the rural areas take charge of their destiny. This is through the use and management of the natural resources they are exposed to. This is a process through which people learn over time and they use this knowledge to adapt to the changing world.
