Looking for Alaska “So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane. (pg.88)” said Miles in the book Looking for Alaska. What Miles then realized was he was falling in love with his new friend Alaska. Alaska Young is a gorgeous but screwed up girl. Her looks indicate that she has everything together but her problems tell otherwise. Chip, or as he wishes to be called ‘Colonel’ is Alaska’s boyfriend. His good looks are deceiving; his arrogance and his drinking make him less of a person than he seems to be. The high school life was not for Miles. Miles wasn’t popular and didn’t have many friends. Immediately he was taken in by his roommate Chip Martin, At Culver Creek School he begins to understand how high schools function and also meets the beautiful girl, Alaska. As more and more days pass at Culver Creek, Miles finds himself making new friends, being adventurous, stepping out of his comfort zone and trying new things. In the time that Miles spent at Culver Creek he often saw the romance that went on between his peers. Chip and Alaska’s on-and-off relationship, and his own awkward experience with Lara Buterskaya. Finally, the relationship he has with Alaska develops from friendship to love. When Miles and Alaska kiss, their relationship becomes awkward. Alaska’s death caused Miles to realize that he loved Alaska for making his life better and for the special times they shared. Clever, beautiful, screwed up, and smart are all words that describe Alaska perfectly. Alaska’s loves clever pranks and ideas but also faces tremendous guilt from her mother’s death. She loves wine, adventures, and teasing the wealthy students. Chip Martin is a genius despite his sometimes rude attitude. He is quite good with his words and also loves his pranks. Alaska’s mother died. After she had died, Alaska took in guilt and as quoted in the book Looking for Alaska “Y’all smoke to enjoy it. I smoke to die.” The author, John Green made it clear that Alaska did not want to be alive. Further into the novel, Alaska ends up taking her life by driving drunk. The accident changed the lives of Chip and Miles drastically. “Sara slammed the door so hard that a sizable biography of Leo Tolstoy fell off my bookshelf and landed with a thud on our checkered floor like an echo of the slamming door. (pg. 36)”. As Green describes how the book fell, it made the story come to life. Not only describing what the floor looked like, it described how it sounded like a door was slamming shut and he made the event seem so real. “Broken glass glittered in the blare of the sun like the road was wearing jewelry. (pg.213)” this is an excellent example of personification, Green made it sound like the road was actually wearing a shiny piece of jewelry. Some could say that Looking for Alaska is book that is hard to get into, but once the novel is started, it is hard to put down. The antics of Miles and his friends pranking people are amusing. Alaska was a fun creative character that was easy to fall in love with. The bonding after Alaska’s death between Chip and Miles is touching. This bonding leads to a friendship that will prove the test of time. John Green makes this novel
