Liberal Education and Graphic Design
Although education has been around for centuries, it was very different, only certain people were able to get schooling which were the wealthy. The low class were stuck doing hardcore labor only to have a future with horrible pay. People were unfortunate and devastated since they could not do anything to better their lives. They were stuck in poverty only being able to work doing hard labor but people still learned some skills doing it. Overtime education has changed and has improved to fit everyone of any ethnics and social ranks so if people cannot afford to receive a proper education, there is free education. In the book, “In Defense of a Liberal Education” by Fareed Zakaria, he states the importance of a Liberal Education by explaining the main points of why it is so important, mentioning the meaning of a Liberal Education and the history and the values of it (Zakaria #). Liberal education helps students to develop strong and practical skills such as communication, analytical and problem solving skills as well as teaching responsibilities so it makes students better people. Although graphic design is a liberal art, it does refer to academic subjects such as literature, philosophy, mathematics, and social and physical sciences, or it can also refer to overall studies in a liberal arts degree programs. In chapter one of the book the author wrote, “In an aged defined by technology and globalization, everyone is talking about skills-based learning… They urge students to stop dreaming and start thinking practically about the skills they will need in the workplace” (Zakaria #). Which is so true because now people need to be well educated on skills that employers look for especially in a field like graphic design. In liberal arts you still learn the basics that is taught in liberal education, however there more creativity in liberal arts. In a field like graphic design, creativity is a very good thing to have since it helps to come up with original ideas. Ideas that will show the level of skills students have in the field. Graphic designers do not necessarily need creativity but it guarantees a job in that field. It is hard to come up with new ideas and innovative designs if not able to tap into your creative resources. Figuring out ways to keep your mind sharp and your ideas fresh will help you succeed in a design career. Also artistic skills will help land a job in graphic design, but again knowing a general understanding of basic artistic elements to help translate that to the computer is a
