Reading Response #1 - The Only Thing To Fear by Caroline Tung Richmond Full Book The Only Thing to Fear is an action packed book based on a what if scenario. It begins around 80 years after Adolf Hitler wins World War II. The Allies had lost after Hitler made genetically engineered soldiers. Hitler had died, and so had his son, so now Dieter Hitler is the fuehrer (or leader) of the Nazi Empire. Zara is a 16 year old girl who is living under the extremely harsh circumstances of the Nazis in the Eastern American Territories (which would be a part of the United States currently). It is about an orphan boy who becomes an apprentice to an Apothecary, Benedict Blackthorn. Benedict and his apprentice Christopher (the orphan boy) are apart of a Guild. Recently, there have been killings of three members of the Guild. The murders are suspected to be people from the Cult of the Archangel. As this goes on, Benedict teaches Christopher how to decipher codes. He teaches him Latin and other things. In this way, he learns how to make recipes hidden from other apothecaries who try to steal Blackthorn’s authentic recipes to cure wounds. Lots of apothecaries beat their apprentices for mistakes, however Blackthorn never lifted a hand on Christopher. Christopher also has a best friend named “Tom”. They always do risky things together. One day, Christopher receives a present of a puzzle cube from Benedict. After getting some help from Tom, they unlock the puzzle cube and reveal some shillings inside the cube. One day, after Blackthorn angrily sends out Christopher to do him a favor, Blackthorn gets murdered. Upon arriving back, Christopher finds a note in scrambled code. It is confusing and Tom and him try their best to decipher it. They only get a jumble of letters and “Hugh’s 4th”. Hugh is another apothecary. This message makes no sense to Christopher.
