The book of Jeremiah is one of the better-studied prophets in the Old Testament. His prophecies are directed toward the disobedient people of Israel, but specifically, Judah, as this is where he begins his ministry. God speaks through him in many ways, but one of the most interesting oracles would be the metaphor of open wounds in Jeremiah 30. Jeremiah compares ancient Israel to an open wound that will not heal, which is the LORD speaking through him. To further investigate this oracle, it is important to look at the location of Jeremiah, the prophecy in its entirety, and finally how these two interrelate. Jeremiah was sent by God to correct the deviating ways of Israel. “The setting is the final years of the existence of the nation of Judah” (McEntire, 302). Here there is major corruption going on, which God is trying to correct through Jeremiah. Judah, under terrible leadership, had strayed farther and farther away from God, taking up idolatry and shunting God to the side. In essence, Jeremiah was meant to help close the wound that was opened by unfaithfulness. The LORD speaks through Jeremiah, offering solace to their suffering saying “but I will restore you to health and heal your wounds” (Jer 30:17). Of course, Judah would have to reconcile their wrong doings and realize that God is the true king of Israel. But after that, there would be a great comfort and the wound of Judah on the side of Israel would finally be healed. God wants to restore Judah to the way it was, but Judah has to recognize him as their God fully again, first.
