“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samar′ia and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8 RSV)

The book of Acts shows the history of the early church. It assisted in setting some boundaries that we can and are using today to set up our churches and home groups (Acts 2:42-47). In the Luke’s second writing, Acts, he displayed how the church began moving outside the realm of Jerusalem and the Jewish converts.

As I read Acts, I believe the church was moving in a direction to bring non-Jews (Gentiles) into the fold. His focus was to show that the message of the gospel was for all people. This is like our message in modern day spreading of the gospel message. We are to spread the message of Christ wherever we go. We are an extension to of God’s hand to take this message everywhere our feet tread. Ephesians 6:15 tells us, “and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace;” Christ is mandating the church to go on this mission and to spread His message. He did not intend for the message to stay in one area. Matthew shows us this mandate, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,…” (Matt. 28:19a)

“The church is the new people (laos) of God. The term “people” in biblical thought often has a technical sense designating those who stand in a special relationship to God. This usage is by no means unique to Paul but appears frequently in the New Testament,” Ladd writes. We are God’s hands extended.
