Author, Harper Lee, uses descriptive and precise language to appeal to the sense of sight. Even though one cannot physically see the Radley House, they can still use the description to imagine what the house may look like. (Imagery) Scout later describes Boo Radley, the young man who lives in the house, as a “malevolent phantom” over six feet tall who eats squirrels and cats. This description seems to fit with the looks of the house. I predict that in the future events of the book, Boo Radley will be known a regular human instead of some villainous character and the children will finally understand who he really is. One can see the struggling Cunninghams and the deprived Ewells who are both facing the rough end of poverty. I believe that the author is trying to convey an implicit meaning through Walter Cunningham’s story; A person can be poor, troubled, or have a problematic lifestyle and yet they can still be kind and give back to those who will support them. The theme in this chapter relates to the education that children receive in Maycomb county. When interacting with Miss Caroline, Scout does her best to satisfy the teacher but receives punishment in return. Scout experiences her teacher’s wrath simply by learning to read and write at an early age and is frustrated by her inability to understand why her teacher constantly disfavors Scout for well-intentioned actions. In this time period, one can see that it is acceptable for teachers to hit their students as punishment for wrongdoing. Today, punishments usually include a call home to the parents, detention, suspension, or even expulsion. Violence is believed to be a morally wrong way of punishing a child. For example, Boo Radley is one of the story’s mockingbirds. Just as mockingbirds do not harm people but only “sing their hearts out for us,” Boo leaves presents for Scout and Jem and covers Scout with a blanket during the fire. He never meant to harm anyone, but despite the pureness of his heart, Boo has been damaged by his abusive father.Having courage isn’t just about someone’s ability to step up and fight. Kindness is bravery. In the movie Cinderella, the main quote is “Have Courage and Be Kind.” This goes to show what Atticus means by “She was the bravest person I ever knew”. Mrs. Dubose may have seemed unfriendly, but when it came to it, she had more courage and kindness than the rest of the town. She was brave despite her sickness.A person has to change themselves to fit in with whoever is around them in order not to be judged. Today, there is certain fashion, music, sports, and activities that we as humans adapt to in order to fit in.
