25 February 2015 1984 Essay Bob Dylan said “No one is free, even the birds are chained to the sky.” Bob Dylan said this sentence to describe exactly how people live in the Oceania party. In our life everyone should have their own thought and their thought is different compared to others.But in Oceania everyone’s thought is controlled by Big Brother and their thought is only to serve for the party. In this party the worst crime is “thought crime”. In our real life there is no right or wrong about how you think and no one can control your thoughts.

They want to rebel against Oceania and liberate people’s thoughts. Because their ages are very different, so are their thoughts about the party. Winston is thirty-nine years old and Julia is twenty-six years old.The most part of his childhood was before the party came to power about 1960. Julia is different and her most part of her childhood.is under Oceania so many of the regime’s elements that seem scared and evil to Winston but for Julia all these things looks different and not very scary for her. Like Winston, she hates the party and knows the techniques that Oceania used to control people. She knows that Oceania uses sexual repression to control the population. “She even has a better intuitive grasp of the party’s methods than Winston does, planning their affair and often explaining aspects of the party to him. However, the party’s large-scale control of history does not interest or trouble her as it does Winston,” (answers.yahoo.com) because she was born after Oceania was founded. She is a child of the party and she does not know a time when the party was not in control. Julia instructs Winston how to return to London. The two arranged meetings where and when they would meet again. Julia reveals that she is not interested in the revolt. Although, she is a personal rebel. Winston reveals information to Julia about his wife Katherine which he decided weather to not killer her or not. Winston returned to Mr. Charrington’s offer: he had rented the room above his shop in order to spend some private time with Julia. Winston reveals his fear of rats.
Winston’s and Julia’s meeting in the woods signifies breaking the totalitarian ways of the party. Here Winston feels free from observation, and gets a glimpse of the freedom that the party opposes. It's scary to think about not being free, but even in the world today some people don't even have basic human freedoms. Lois Lowry shows us in her books The Giver and Gathering Blue what it would be like not to have freedom and how important it is that we have it.
Woody Guthrie Woody Guthrie, born Woodrow Wilson Guthrie, was born in Okemah, Oklahoma in 1912. When he was 16 he began to travel around the United States (Feather 428). He had a great love for music and soon began writing his own songs about the Great Depression and the treatment of the migrant workers, who were forced to move west because of the Dust Bowl. “I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.” ― Charlotte Brontë. Freedom is an idea with no concrete explanation. Every person has their own beliefs of what it means to be free because no one has the same experiences. Experiences vary from person to person and influence their view on the seven letter word - freedom. Because of differing perspectives, freedom generally translates into the ability to do as one desires; it is defined as having freewill. To be free is to have no restraints upon one’s being.
Bob Marley once stated, “Better to die fighting for freedom then be a prisoner all the days of your life.” He is trying to say that it is better to sacrifice your life in order to gain freedom than be a slave for the rest of your life. Before America was considered the “land of the free,” the United States faced problems like the black codes, ratification of the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments, the Civil War, and segregation caused by the Plessy v. Ferguson debate. America became the “land of the free” after it failed several political and social struggles.
As a child Dylan was comfortable being the center of attention, often writing creative poetry for his mother and on occasion singing. Dylan had no formal music lessons, but none the less he began to compose. Later at age 14, he took up the guitar and shortly after formed a band, one of many he played the guitar in. Always plunging ahead, performing to his up most potentional, Dylan absorbed his surroundings as a source of inspiration. Even during his early efforts Dylan responded very positivly to mainstream musicians, such as country star Hank Williams. Yet, he responded especially well to early rock stars such as Little Richard, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. In the summer of 1959, after graduation Dylan began to work at a cafe, where he began to pay increasing attention to folksingers such as Judy Collins and Jesse Fuller. Finding an instant connection with their songs, songs relevant to social issues. Dylan was drawn into both the musical style and the social message of these indivisuals.
The party wants to make communism known by controlling the citizen’s lives. The people realize how important the proles are in this society. Proles have immense power over the government but, it’s through the party manipulating them into believing they own everything in Oceania. They
Bob marley was born February 6th 1945. He was a Jamaican singer, guitarist, and songwriter, a pioneer of Jamaican reggae music. Probaly Considered one of the greatest artists of the genre, he was the first Jamaican reggae performer to achieve significant international stardom. He was born in Rhoden Hall, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica . Marley was learning the welding trade in Kingston when he formed his first band group, the Rudeboys, in 1961. The group later became known as the Wailers. The Wailers included vocalists Bunny Livingston and Peter Tosh, both went solo and was successful at there new careers. The group's early recordings were in a style called ska, a hybrid of New Orleans rhythm and blues and Jamaican mento. A Mento was the first of the reggae styles. The term reggae is commonly used as a collective designation for a number of successive forms of Jamaican pop music—ska. By the late 1960s, influences from United States rhythm and blues, Jamaican folk rhythm, and rhythmic, improvised verses were. synthesized into the rock steady and poppa-top styles. and Marley emerged as a rising talent in this new genre of Jamaican music. As expected, the Party captures the couple and both are tortured by the Party in attempt to change their negative connotation surrounding Big Brother. Winston immediately confesses his crimes, although he still clings on to the hope and trust he has in his love for Julia which prevents him from giving into the Party’s initial torture. However, Winston does not expect the Party to be aware of the depth of his trust; it was their plan all along to capture Winston at the peak of his relationship with Julia, The Party captures Winston at that moment because they know that his trust in Julia is at an optimal level for exposure. By targeting that trust, the Party is able to stop that trust dead in their tracks and instead manipulate it towards Big Brother. Eventually, Winston follows this path and betrays Julia. The Party destroys his love by exposing his deepest fear of rats. This leads Winston to realize that his love for Julia is not all powerful and eternal since he is able to give it up so readily in order to save himself. After being released, Winston sees Julia and she describes that she betrayed him as well. She comments that in regards to the betrayal,
George Herbert throughout his poem “The Collar” puts his thoughts, feelings and complaints on paper on freedom restrictions. He resolves to break free from the binds fastening him to the life he fights to be free from. In various ways, countless things hold down and confine us from doing certain things daily. All the way through history people fought for the rights that tied them down for what they believed in. Herbert explains in his poem that one requires some restrictions even if we cannot understand the motive behind it.
One example of rebelling against the party is that of Julia’s sexual escapades. She plots and plans to have sex with many of the different party members in order to find release in her otherwise boring lifestyle and by doing so she increases the amount of mass personal rebellion within the party’s regiment. After Winston and Julia are done having sex in the woods for the first time, he asks her how many other men has she done this with. She told him that she had done it with “scores” of other men and Winston is delighted to hear the good news. He feels that the more men she has had sexual encounters with makes the party weaker because those men don’t really feel committed to their party. Julia does not dream of rebellion against their oppressors as Winston does. However, she accepts her role in society and goes about life enjoying herself when she can.
There are many different ways someone is considered to be free, the direct definition is to enjoy personal rights or liberty, this can be interpreted in different forms. In their poems “Caged Bird”, and “Sympathy”, Maya Angelou and Paul Laurance Dunbar use caged birds to represent what it means to be free. They both use birds to convey a better image for the reader. Birds are used in both poems of “Caged Bird” and “Sympathy” as a central image because the caged birds are metaphors for true freedom and hope.
