Blue Parrotfish When people think of parrots, they think of the rainforest and when they picture fish, they think of the ocean. No fish could survive out of the water and no parrot would survive in the ocean. Everyone would think they would be completely different animals and there wouldn’t be an animal with both bird and fish features. Despite this thought, the blue parrotfish makes its home in the tropic oceans. Most people haven’t heard of a blue parrotfish, but it has many unique features that are interesting and help it stand out. Just like the name sounds, the blue parrotfish is a blue fish with parrot like features. The blue parrotfish normally spends 80% of its day eating and looking for food. Their diet consists of algae, coral and tiny, sand-dwelling organisms (Blue Parrotfishes, Scarus Coeruleus). This means that they are omnivores, eating both meat and plants (Parrot Fish). The parrotfish is hunted by various aquatic animals as well. During the night, some species will create a clear blanket at night to hide their scent. This helps the fish stay alive because the predator cannot smell them as easily (Parrot Fish). The parrotfish, of all kinds, is used primarily for meat purposes. This is an extremely rare meat in the United States, but common in island states. In Polynesia, parrotfish was once used as a royal food for the king and his family. Now, it is a traditional dish served raw in Polynesia as well as other tropical islands (Parrot Fish).
