On the second day, Zipacna uses ants to trick the boys. He has a group of ants take some of his hair up to the surface to trick the boys into thinking he is really dead. The boys rejoice over their defeat of the god. On the third day, Zipacna causes the boys’ house to collapse on top of them. All Four Hundred Boys die due to the collapse. After their deaths, they are transformed into the constellation called Hundrath. Without delay, Hunahpu and Xbalanque will come to kill both of Seven Macaw’s children. The Hero Twins make a plan to kill Zipacna. Hunahpu and Xbalanque create a fake crab where they act as the forearms and control the claws. In an attempt to try and prove herself, Blood Moon is directed to follow certain tasks proposed by Xmucane. Xmucane orders Blood Moon to go gather a net of ripe corn as food for the children. Blood Moon accepts this seemingly easy request. When she comes upon the garden, there is only one clump of corn available. Blood Moon panics for a moment, for she fears of being turned away by Xmucane. She summons the guardians of food to help her grow more corn. The guardians comply and grant Blood Moon a full harvest of corn. At first, Xmucane is shocked that Blood Moon is able to get this much corn. She even investigates the garden to see if Blood Moon harvested all of their corn. Xmucane returns with great joy and announces that Blood Moon is her daughter-in-law. Once Xmucane accepts Blood Moon into her family, Blood Moon gives birth to the famed Hero Twins. The birth of Hunahpu and Xbalanque is sudden and occurs in the mountains. Due to their rambunctious nature, the twins are placed on several different terrains in at attempt to find their ideal spot to fall asleep peacefully. All hearts were good, but the bravest captives were to be best nourishing to the gods as a result, widespread warring took place. The Aztec people sought to bring captives back to the Aztec temples for sacrifice. They would sacrifice people in name of the gods.

In the process of sacrificing individuals and facing starvation, people could have begun practicing cannibalism in an attempt to satisfy the protein shortages present during times when the normal diet was not available. I have concluded that Aztec human sacrifice is the result of events that led to extreme behaviors. Crop failures could have led to an increase in sacrifices to please the gods, which meant more bodies and opportunities for the Aztecs to consume human flesh to fulfill their temporary nutrient shortage.

The story gives us insight to the Maya’s understanding of dualism. The twins complimented each other in this way: if one brother lacked certain skills in an area, the other one excelled in that area. This practically made them as one. It was with teamwork that the twins were able to defeat the Death Lords. Teamwork is important because in that culture, if the tribe did not work together, they would parish. In addition to them showing qualities of heroism, the twins were brave enough to sacrifice themselves when they jumped to their death in their plan of defeating the Death Lords. When the children become stranded on the island, the rules of society no longer apply to them. Without the supervision of their parents or of the law, the primitive nature of the boys surfaces, and their lives begin to fall apart. The downfall starts with their refusal to gather things for survival. The initial reaction of the boys is to swim, run, jump, and play. They do not wish to build shelters, gather food, or keep a signal fire going. Consequently, the boys live without luxury that could have been obtained had they maintained a society on the island. Instead, these young boys take advantage of their freedom and life as they knew it deteriorates.
