The horse is a spirit animal that can be used to describe many characteristics in the book Bless Me Ultima. The horse symbolizes many things, some being personal drive, passion, and an appetite for freedom. An appetite for freedom is the symbol that sticks out the most from the many. In the novel Bless Me Ultima many of the males spoke of freedom. Antonio’s brothers all wanted freedom. As soon as they arrived home from the war their parents were telling them what they would do from then on. Their father hassled them with plans of moving. His dream was for him and his boys to move to California. It’s all he’s dreamed about ever since they went to war. This is where his driving force comes from. As soon as they arrived he pulled out a bottle …show more content…
This would be showing a balance between instinctive and tamed parts of their personalities. In the text of Bless Me Ultima, there’s a character called “Horse”. This character is purely instinctive, wild , and aggressive in nature. He’s also rude and obnoxious as well as untamable. He stands out from the other males because unlike them he shows no signs of being tamed. An example would be Antonio’s father Gabriel who is not only married but, also eventually gives up his dreams and stays with his wife and kids. He wished for his three oldest to help the family move to California and be cowboys with him but, he gave up his dream wants he realized the same roaming spirit that was within him was in his sons as well. Gabriel’s three oldest sons wanted to live their own lives the way they wanted. Two left home and made quick decisions with little thought. The youngest of the older brothers stayed home and found a job but, chose to spend his money at the whore house Rosie’s. Another male character that had similar characteristics that can be related to those of a horse is Narciso. He gave warnings and forebode many things in the text, this is like a horse neighing to warn of impending danger. The males in the novel Bless Me Ultima are similar in many ways. Their personalities differ but, they all have something in common. The horse quilities they portray are
Saul Indian Horse is an Ojibway child who grew up in a land which offered little contact with anyone belonging to a different kind of society until he was forced to attend a residential school in which children were being stripped away of their culture with the scope of assimilating them into a more “civilized” community. Saul’s childhood in the school, greatly pervaded by psychological abuse and emotional oppression, was positively upset once one of the priests, Father Leboutillier, introduced him to the world of hockey, which soon become his sole means of inclusion and identification, mental well-being and acknowledged self-worth in his life. It is though universally acknowledged how, for every medal, there are always two inevitably opposite
Whilst there has been countless attacks on the Native American people the Battle of Wounded Knee, if you can in fact call it a battle, is the event that can be held as the most accountable for the destruction of the native American culture; the obliteration of their hope and dreams. The Battle of Wounded Knee resulted in the death of three hundred Native Americans, half of which were women and children. White Plume, in the article In the Spirit of Crazy Horse, explains that “the whole Sioux Nation was wounded at that last terrible massacre, and we’ve been suffering ever since”. This sentiment is expressed throughout the remaining article as well as in Sherman Alexie’s Reservation Blues.
“ Then he squared his shoulders and cried fiercely ‘ I shall slay Tupa, and win the king’s reward.’” This demonstrates that he is eager and wants to fight the beast and mad because the shark killed his dad which illustrates that he is adventurous and wants revenge. “I wish you would paddle out to the reef this afternoon and bring back a new bunch.’ The boy agreed eagerly.” Which also demonstrates he is eager and adventurous because he wants to adventure to another island and explore which proves my point that he would not back down to an adventure. This also shows that he cares for his family by running a short errand, which is the next trait.

Bless Me Ultima, the captivating controversial novel that was banned, forbidden, and burned. Written by Rudolfo Anaya, the novel is centered on the relationship between the coming of age of a young boy and an elderly medicine woman who helps him contend with the battle between good and evil that rages in his village. At each life turn there is Ultima, who delivered him into the world and will nurture the birth of his soul and destiny. Antonio Marez is only six years old when Ultima comes to stay with his family in New Mexico during the WWII. Ultima is a curandera, one who cures with herbs and magic. Under her wise wing, Antonio will test the bonds that tie him to his people, and discover himself in the pagan past, in his father's wisdom, and in his mother's Catholicism. The everyday life events in the story capture polytheism, rites of passage, animistic, magic, and animalism. Inevitably, this controversial novel portrays religion through every twist and turn.
Throughout the year we have read novels like Bless Me Ultima, The Sun Also Rises, The Scarlet Letter, and The Crucible where characters choose to follow their heart instead of what society dictates. They had a conflict with religion, love and choose to listen to their heart to solve it even when they knew it would end badly.
For example Manus is a very down to earth and loving character. He cares for Sarah as if he was her father and talks to her gently and with love, empathy and consideration. "Yes...good...c'mon girl...you can do it....just try..." et cetera. But there are flaws with this relationship also; Manus views Sarah in a very fatherly light, although Sarah does not view Manus like that at all, she gives him flowers and cares for him in a very separate way.
As with human friendship, the bond that exists between humans and animals can sometimes contain secrets. The hidden mysteries between humans and animals are ironically open because humans tend to talk about the inward discrepancies of their pets with others in front of them. In the poem, "Riding a One-Eyed Horse," by Henry Taylor, the narrator creates a peaceful tone that flows throughout the poem as he/she somberly instructs a potential rider how to ride his one-eyed beast. It's questionable as to how much the horse understands this situation.
Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya is a coming of age story about a young boy named Antonio Marez. The novel takes place in New Mexico where Antonio tries to fulfill his parent’s expectations while struggling with religion. Through Antonio, Anaya defies the some of the principles in religion and expresses her interpretation on the system of beliefs. Antonio’s religious confusion suggests that man should be able to choose his own religion and destiny. In the Bless me, Ultima, Antonio experiences conflict in his religious beliefs because of the deaths he witnesses, the new ideas that he learns, and his open-minded mentality.
Narciso- An honorable man who tries to protect Ultima from harm. Because of the loss of his young wife, Narciso begins to drink and is known as the town drunk. Through his garden, Narciso makes magic by growing beautiful flowers and plants. He is later killed by Tenorio in cold blood while trying to warn Ultima of harm and is buried as the town drunk instead of the hero that he is.
Contrary to the story’s focus on horses, the movie focuses on the romance between John Grady and Alejandra as its poster has the couple with a greater presence compared to the miniscule graphic of horses shoved on the bottom; whereas the book’s cover is graced with the image of a horse and only of that horse. Of all the events that were absent from the movie, the romance scenes are the most kept intact as well as an odd addition of an onlooker dancing when John Grady finishes talking with Alejandra on the phone after being bailed out of jail. In fact, it feels like horses are more of an afterthought in this adaptation because John Grady does not put any emphasis on them as he does in the novel. While in jail, John Grady had a dream about horses, “… in the dream he was among the horses running and in the dream he himself could run with the horses …” (McCarthy 161) In the fashion of flickering images for a subliminal message, brief, flashing visions of Alejandra are injected into this dream when there were none. Romance is pushed as the main focus of the story, but it fails to make the couple fulfilling since the dynamic between John Grady and Alejandra is not developed well enough to make it
In ‘horse,’ the speaker describes a horse being betrayed and then killed in a small town in Texas. The first two stanzas described the horse thundering towards outstretched hands being attracted to a field of corn but instead it is attacked by a group of white teenage boys who leave it mutilated. The sheriff of the town does not do anything because he believes that it is in their nature to do so. In the last stanzas the Mexican owner puts the horse out of his misery and someone tries to pay him for the damage. His people are disappointed because they believe that money could not make up for the death of the horse but, they do nothing about it. It would seem the horse in the poem is meant to represent the Mexican culture and how it is being eradicated by the dominant white society in the United States.
Horses are the most noticeable symbol in the whole book. Horses are a necessity to the boys. The horses are political and economic assets to Grady, Rawlins and Blevins. Specifically for John Grady, horses are more important to him than humans. He constantly dreams of him running with horses and always
The curiosity of what our destiny will be and what our future holds has crossed our minds once or twice. Destiny is the conclusion to many life situations we are faced with in our everyday lives, but no one could figure out what their destiny is until the time is right. Antonio from the novel Bless Me, Ultima written by Rudolfo Anaya and Paikea from Whale Riders run through many conflicts trying to seek their destinies. Antonio, must choose to follow her mother’s footsteps of tending the land or become free and wild like his father and older brothers as well as deciding whether or not to follow and walk alongside Ultima, even if she may be evil. Unlike Antonio, Paikea must prove to herself and her grandfather that she is able to lead her tribe out of depression and laziness, even if she may not physically hold the components of becoming a leader. Both Antonio and Paikea are able to find their destinies, but they each have unique and individual experiences of family pressure, spiritual leaders and becoming a leader.
In conclusion, horses mean more to me than many other things. They are part of my friends and family, but I also have great respect for them. Horses are surrounded by benefits that make us feel exceptional. Their colors are all attractive. Their breeds are marvelous and unique. Their history with us is quite a beneficial relationship. Their behavior is different from ours, but is an easy language to learn. Showing horses is exhilarating! Caring for them can seem like a chore, but is actually an overall fun and propitious experience. Riding horses is fun and meaningful, not just something to learn or do just because. And, no matter what people say, I believe there is something truly special about my dear friend the horse.
