In the play, A Streetcar Named Desire, the character, Blanche Dubois is very interesting to read and learn about. In the play, Blanche does through a lot in her lifetime. She is a strong woman, but she seems to never realize she has been put through so much shame. In the time that the play was written woman’s rights were thought of very little. They did not stand up for themselves. They were treated awful by men. Blanche Dubois was one of those women who thought she stood solid for herself, but really did not at all. By this, one can clearly see that her character was used to shown one of the themes of the play, A Streetcar Named Desire. At the beginning of the play it is expressed how Blanche Dubois is so “full of herself,” then she was before some things happened to her. She seemed as if she had to be perfect and look perfect. For example, in scene one she is having a conversation with her sister, Stella. She says to Stella, “I want you to look at my figure! You know I haven't put on one ounce in ten years, Stella?” This shows
Such as, themes to do with men, marriage, society and class, sex, drugs and alcohol, apparences, madness, morality, and etc. The character, Blanche Dubois, doesn't only show one of those themes, she is shown in all of them. Blanche has a problem with men treating her badly. She obviously has a problem with the idea of of marriage because of her husband passing. With facing problems with men comes a bad understanding of sex for Blanche. Meaning she thinks everyone can use her. Blanche also goes through many difficulties with society and her appearance. This is because her whole outlook on life changed dramatically. Alcoholism takes over her life and causes a lot of madness to happen. Lastly, morality comes into play a lot through the character Blanche. Therefore, one can see that William, the author, uses Blanche to express a variety of themes for the
