How has America changed as a society since the times just after the abolishment of slavery? The autobiography titled “Black Boy” by Richard Wright tells Wright’s life of racial discrimination in the early 1900’s. Wright faces many obstacles and through his life experiences, he adapts to the injustices that all blacks faced during that time. Wright writes about his hatred for the discrimination that he faces throughout the book. In 2018, America’s society has changed drastically and civil rights were given to all. But the roots of where America came from is still in place and racial segregation-even though not as prominent as before- still exists in America. Blacks in America are still largely clumped up into isolated groups in cities that have poor living conditions. The article titled “The ghettoization of black Americans hasn’t been reversed” by Charles Lane states that in cities with large black populations like Detroit, Cleveland, or Chicago, “Their average dissimilarity index stands at 76, down only slightly from 84 in 1970.” This racial isolation is not helping blacks start up their lives again after years of torture and abuse. Wright would be overjoyed of the news that a dark-skinned would become the leader of America. In the time that Wright was alive, a black person being successful was in danger of being murdered as seen with his uncle Hoskins. The role as the president of the United States would have been impossible for a black man when Wright was actually alive, and if he saw this happen today, he wouldn’t believe it. Wright would talk about how Obama inspires him to follow his dreams. If a Black American could become the president of the United States, what would be holding him back from becoming a writer, He would write about how Obama is not just an inspiration to him, but also for all black Americans that there is a chance for them to succeed even in times where it is unfavored for them. Obama winning the election of 2008 is a milestone for America and its pursue towards a truly equal society for all
