The Sultan of Swat, Jack Dunn's baby, The Caliph of Clout, The Big Bam, The Great Bambino are among a few of the nicknames given to George Herman "Babe" Ruth Jr. who should be next on the list on Time "Person of the Year”. Basketball has Michael Jordan, Golf has Tiger Woods, Boxing has Muhammed Ali, and when one thinks of Baseball, the first name that pops up is Babe Ruth. His accomplishments in the sport of baseball revamped how the world viewed baseball. Babe’s greatest strength greatest in baseball was his slugging power, which intimidated pitchers because if given the chance, he was gonna hit that ball out of the park. His slugging power and pitching made him unique and a star attraction for baseball fans around the world. This new found excitement for America’s sport was very important for U.S Citizens at the time due to the country going through the Great Depression. Americans needed any positive encouragement to get them through this time, and the Great Bambino’s slugging power it was what Americans needed at the time. He not only revolutionized baseball but also contributed to United States history. These contributions along with the sense of hope and encouragement he provided American citizens during this time in American history are why he should be declared Time "Person of the Year".

If Babe didn’t give hope to americans, the United States might have suffered more in the long run. He endured the hardships of being the only African-American in the league at the time and taking all the hate from the racists, while still putting up remarkable numbers. Even as a white man during the time of integration in baseball, you could have nothing but respect for Jackie Robinson.

Henry Louis Gehrig or his original name Ludwig Hienrich Gehrig (“Britannica” 1), was born on June 19, 1903 in the Harlem part of New York City. His parents were both German Immigrants and were very poor. (“Britannica” 1) His mom Christina Gehrig was a very hard working individual. She worked many jobs such as house keeper, maid, and restaurant server. Lou’s dad had trouble finding jobs since he was ill often. (“Great Athletes” 2) Surprisingly to many people Lou Gehrig played many sports when he was young. (“Great Athletes” 2 ) He was also a fat little kid surprisingly, but that didn’t discourage him from playing sports. He exceled in many sports such as swimming, sports skating, football, basketball, and most importantly baseball (“Great Athletes” 2) . In one instance, Lou Gehrig hit a game winning homerun at their high school championship and was called by news reporters as the “The Babe Ruth of high school”. Babe Ruth is one of the biggest names in sports. Babe Ruth was born on February 6, 1895 in Baltimore. He was one of eight children. His mother was a saloonkeeper. He went to St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys where he learned to play baseball. Jack Dunn who played for the Baltimore Orioles saw him and decided to adopt him. After he was adopted Dunn sold him to The Boston Red Sox. While he was with the Red Sox he inaugurated the “Big Bang” style of batting. But in the year 1920 Babe Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees for $100,000 and a $350,000 the money would go to funding of a play on Broadway. When he arrived at New York he exploded with popularity. He was a media star he helped the newspapers because everyone wanted know about him. But he also produced on the field. While with the Yankees he won seven championships, four World Series titles, and set the record for most homeruns in a season with 60 in 1927. Some people call the old Yankee stadium the stadium Babe Ruth built. He has helped make the Yankees what they are today. The Boston Red Sox could have the success of the Yankees if they had kept Babe Ruth. At the end of his career he had the second most home runs with 714, batting average of .342.
On June 26, 1911 in Port Arthur, Texas Babe Zaharias, born Mildred Ella Didrecksen was born. Her parents’ names are Hannah Marie Olson and Ole Didreckson. Her home was hit by a hurricane when she was just four years old and her and her six siblings moved 17 miles inland to Beaumont, Texas. Both of her parents were athletic so it wasn’t a surprise when Babe grew up excelling in all sports she played. Although Jackie Robinson was not the best African-American baseball player of his time, his attitude and ability to handle racist harassment led the way for the rest of his race to play Major League Baseball, amongst other sports. Being accepted into professional sports also helped African-Americans become more easily accepted into other aspects of life. Jackie's impact in the world for the black population is enormous.
