Do you every question why global warming is a thing? Do you ever stop to pick up trash on the side of the road? Have you actually ever thought of what you could do to make the world a better place? There are many things in the world that we humans can do to benefit our own ecosystem. From 1993 to 2017, through engagement and hands-on education, the television show Bill Nye, the Science Guy demonstrates the foundations of Science. Bill Nye, a Boeing mechanical engineer with a bachelor degree, started a show back in 1993 starring on Disney channel called Bill Nye the Science Guy. This attracts the viewers’ attention which in turn makes them follow what it says. Doing this makes the earth better one step at a time. Trees are one way of keeping the environment nourishing. Nevertheless, cutting down too many trees leaves us with too much Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere which could drastically change the temperature of our planet leading to global warming. Some trash may be biodegradable, meaning that it will decompose and become part of the earth again. Most, however, are not, they just sit there. In Michael Pollan’s “Why Bother?” Pollan argues that each person can contribute to helping to the environment by erasing their carbon footprints. In my everyday life I experience the choice of driving my car to work or riding my bike. More often than not I choose to drive my car because it is the easier option. I, along with many other people, believe that my individual impact will not cause a larger impact on the global scale. In Pollan’s essay, he makes each person think about the effect they are leaving on the environment and how each person, as an individual, can change his ways before it is too late. Wendell Berry, a naturalist and well-respected and influential writer, was a key factor in recognition of the environmental crisis and how to solve the problem.
On December 5th, 1782, the eighth president was born in Kinderhook, New York. His birth parents were Maria Van Buren and Abraham Van Buren. Even though he ran a tavern, which held many political meetings and first exposed Martin Van Buren to politics his father was a farmer. Van Buren would be present at many local schools, and the Kinderhook Academy until he was the age of 14. Van Buren’s father had secured Martin an apprenticeship with a lawyer because he was unable to send Martin to college because he could not afford it. In later years Van Buren had studied law and in 1803 he was admitted to the bar. Van Buren had married his long distant cousin Hannah Hoes, they later had 4 children together.

The show is also a comedy and has funny clips related to the teaching to make the teaching fun. The show aired from September 10 1993 to June 20, 1998. This video successfully uses the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos and logos to support its claims on climate change. The way National Geographic uses ethos, or credibility, for this video is strong and thought out. The main speaker is none other than Bill Nye, who most students grew up watching in elementary school; to learn different aspects of science; and is a very respectable and credible speaker for this topic, of climate change. Nye graduated from Cornell University with a degree in mechanical engineering, then moved to Seattle, Washington to work as an engineer for Boeing and ultimately became a science educator, winning educational awards for his famous program, “Bill Nye the Science Guy”(Biography.com). Nye has extremely credible credentials to be able to speak about this topic of science, who speaks in a serious, concerned and informative manner to grab the attention of the viewer and explain that climate change is a serious affair that needs to be acted upon.

Former Vice President, Al Gore’s speech, The Climate Emergency, was a highly accurate prediction of the circumstances our planet would be under in coming years. The facts relevant as of 2004 are still true in the year 2015. While many companies and individuals have learned to contribute to helping our plant go greener, the dangers of the climate change are still a pressing issue supported by scientific evidence. With occurrences such as extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and ice cap disappearances, global warming is physically being show on our planet and in order to prevent a complete reversed climate on our hemispheres, the population of Earth as a whole must ban together to reduce our carbon footprint.

So what could really be done about this issue? Well, humans are ultimately to blame for this, and while there is no one, immediate solution to this complication, there are smaller solutions that can first be taken to eventually reduce the effects that climate change has on the planet. Our planet has managed to survive and thrive for about 4.54 billion years. In the last 2 million years we have caused enough damage and destruction to make our world “broken” beyond repair. We will not be able to get back the world we once had.
