His freshman year he spent more time in the computer lab than he did in class. Gates did not need to study much instead of studying he got more hours on his sleep and would study before the test and passed with a reasonable grade. Gates stayed in contact with Paul Allen, who went to Washington State University for only two years and dropped out to work for Honeywell in Boston. Both Allen and Gates were fascinated by the possibilities they could create in the world of personal computing. That fascination led to an article they saw called Popular Electronics that featured the Altair 8800 mini-computer kit. When seeing this article both students had contacted the company and asked if they needed a software built for them and luckily they needed one. After two months the students developed a software that meshed perfectly with the Altair computer. They were then hired at micro instrumentation and telemetry systems and Gates left Harvard to work. Gates and Allen formed a partnership called Micro-Soft. Microsoft was not profitable in the beginning. Only ten percent of people used Microsoft basic software. Ed Roberts left the company to enter medical school leaving Allen and Gates on their own. The home has some futuristic features, including an underwater sound system in the pool and computerized pins that the house can read to customize temperature, music, and lighting. Their house has twenty-four bathrooms, plus a garage that can fit up to twenty-three cars. In his mansion's plenty rooms are libraries filled with books. Gates is a passionate reader, and has a rare-books dealer that stocks his library for him. One priceless item is Leonardo da Vinci's "Codex Leicester," a 15th century manuscript that Gates bought at auction for 30.8 million dollars. Gates also has an art collection. In 1998, he set a record for American art when he paid thirty-six million dollars for Winslow Homer's "Lost on the Grand Banks." He owns art by American artists Andrew Wyeth and William Merritt Chase. Tennis is one of Gate’s favorite hobbies. In 1997 Gates had paid twenty-one million dollars for his private jet. In the beginning of Microsoft he bought a 1979 Porsche 911 that he used to race around the desert. He always liked fast cars. When Gates bought a Porsche 959, the car was held up at customs because it had not yet met Environmental Protection Agency standards. Gates holds several honorary doctorates from universities throughout the world. In 2005, he received an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire
