The Bikini Atoll is one of the twenty-nine atolls and five islands that make the Marshall Islands. The atolls that include the Bikini Atoll distribute across the Pacific Ocean which equal up to about 350,000 square miles. This an amazing size. The atoll of Bikini includes beautiful sandy beaches and swaying palms.
It all started in December 1945, when the US president at the time Harry Truman gave the order for the army and navy officials that there would need to be nuclear joint testing of nuclear weapons, to determine the effect of the atomic bombs on American warships so they can be ready for anything that could happen to them. They went out looking for an area that was isolated enough from the rest of the world in order to be able to test their nuclear weapons without causing enough damage to start a crisis. They found the Bikini Atoll and Commodore Ben Wyatt, the military governor of the Marshall Islands, where Bikini is, went there in 1946 and asked the 167 Bikini islanders if it were okay for them to leave their atoll for a short amount of time so that the United States could begin testing their atomic bombs for the good of mankind and to end all world wars. The one in charge of the Bikini, King Juda, said after long discussions with his people that they will stand before the American delegation and they will believe that everything is in the hands of God.

This island was under Japanese control during World War II, until the Americans freed them. Glad to be out of Japanese control, the Islanders are happy, until the United States needs to do something even more devastating then Japan ever did.
The United States gained supremacy by using the atomic bomb as a threat to force their enemies to surrender. After Japan led an attack on Pearl Harbor, the American forces retaliated by dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, and then threatening to do the same on Nagasaki. “We have just begun to use this weapon against your homeland. If you still have any doubt, make inquiry as to what happened to Hiroshima when just one atomic bomb fell on that city” (Department). This shows how the atomic bomb was used as a means of intimidation; the use of the atomic bomb forced other countries into submission by threatening them with nuclear attack. Furthermore, the United States made it clear to its enemies that they had alternative options for reconciliation before nuclear attacks were to take place. The President of the United States explained “thirteen consequences of an honorable surrender,” and urged that Japan “accept those consequences and begin the work of building a new, better, and peace loving Japan” (Department). This demonstrates the use of an ethical appeal by the United States because it arrouses ones sense of duty to preserve peace. Under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration the atomic bomb was being developed. After Roosevelt died, his vice president Harry Truman was appointed President of the United States. Truman was never informed about the bombs development until an emergency cabinet meeting (Kuznick 9). Truman had to make the fatal decision on whether the bomb was to be dropped on Japan. With the idea of going to war, Truman had to think about the lives of the thousand American soldiers. At that time, the United States had what was said to have a monopoly of atomic bombs. Soon thereafter, the Soviet Union began working on atomic weaponry. The nuclear bomb was the most devastating weapon ever created by man. It was developed between 1942 and 1945 during the second World War. The project to build the worlds first atomic weapon was called The Manhattan Project. The nuclear bomb was based on the idea of splitting an atom to create energy, this is called fission. Three bombs were created, “Trinity”, “Little Boy”, and “Fat Man”. “Trinity” was dropped on a test site in New Mexico on July 16, 1945, proving the theories, engineering and mathematics of the bomb to be correct. Shortly after that, not more than 2 months, the U.S. performed the first actual nuclear attack in the history of war. The bomb “Little Boy” was dropped on the town of Hiroshima, instantly killing thousands. “Fat Man” was dropped shortly after on the town of Nagasaki. After the bombing almost all scientist involved with the creation of the bomb regretted its construction and spoke out against the abolishment of nuclear weapons.

Corals are photosynthesizing organisms, meaning they use sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. Without coral reefs, oxygen would be limited and humans could not survive on this planet for very long.
My topic is the Mariana Trench. The Mariana Trench is located in the Pacific Ocean, just east of the 14 Mariana Islands near Japan. We do not know exactly when the Mariana Trench was formed but we do know when it was discovered. The Mariana Trench was discovered on March 23, 1875. The first detected depths of the Mariana Trench were recorded by the British ship, the H.M.S Challenger. The Challenger scientists recorded the depth of the Mariana Trench to be 4,475 fathoms which is around 5 miles or 8 kilometers if you convert the units. In order to do this, the scientists used a weighted sounding rope. In 1951 a different British ship, the H.M.S Challenger II, came back to that spot with an echo-sounder and found a depth of about 7 miles which is around 11 kilometers. Tourism, destructive fishing, climate change, coastal development, and other human activities, put our coral reefs in danger. Over a third of the world’s coral reefs will be gone within our lifetime. This means devastating loss in income, food, and scientific discoveries. There is still hope for the coral reefs, however bad the outlook may seem. Conservation projects in countries throughout the world have initiatives led to conserve the coral reefs. Coral reefs protection is being established worldwide and is considered one of the best ways to achieve reef protection. Human activity is directly and indirectly causing damage to the coral reefs.
