Bernie Sanders is the candidate in which I was a delegate for in Mountlandia. Sanders is currently serving his second term as a senator from the state of Vermont. Prior to becoming a United States Senator, Bernie Sanders was the Mayor of the largest city in Vermont, Burlington. Sanders also served in the United States House of Representative. He considers himself a democratic socialist. A democratic socialist is “ a person who believes that both the economy and society should be run democratically-to meet public needs, not to make profits for a few.” On April 30, 2015, Senator Sanders announced his candidacy for the United States Presidential term of 2017-2021. Therefore, Senator Sanders proposes to raise the minimum wage to $15 over the next several years for fast food and federal contract workers. Senator Sanders finds it unjust that men and women are working long hours and still cannot afford to live a decent life. Additionally, many Americans work overtime without being paid. Therefore, “Bernie has been encouraging the Obama Administration to ensure that more workers receive overtime pay protection. The Administration’s new rule extending that protection to everyone making less than $947 a week is a step in the right direction.” Senator Sanders believes this is a step from the Obama Administration because as a country we protecting the average American’s rights. The first controversy that Bernie Sanders encountered was his interview with the New York Daily News. Senator Sanders was unable to discuss other topics besides Wall Street and income inequality. He was unable to explain how many of his campaigns promises will be paid for and achieved. For example, the New York Daily News asked Senator Sanders, “how he would break up the big banks,” he was unable to respond and unable to name one statue that Wall Street violated. Moreover, when Sanders was asked about the drone policy used in the Middle East, Senator Sanders did not have an opinion on whether that was the correct tactic. The New York Daily Post, therefore, acknowledged that Senators Sanders is uncomfortable discussing foreign policy and showed to be more Pro-Israel than most individuals on the progressive spectrum. The New York Daily Post commented that this interview had nothing to do with who the media wanted as president but about policy details. Senator Sanders has yet to address this disastrous interview with the New York Daily
