Beowulf: Lof, Comitatus, And Wyrd

The poem of Beowulf is an epic poem written by an unknown author. Beowulf is about a strong, mighty man who fought monsters to protect the people of Geats and later he succeed the throne. The three things that are important to Beowulf culture are Lof, Comitatus, and Wyrd.

First, Log is important to Beowulf culture because his father Edgetho carried Lof when he was a warrior with high expectation in him. In line 193-194, “Edgetho had begun a bitter feud killing Hathlar a Wulfing warrior”. The quote explains what Beowulf’s father had done to achieve the fame, but a bad fame. In line 155-160, “I drove five great giants into chains, chased all of that race from earth, I swam in the blackest of night, hunting monster out of the ocean, and killing them one by one.” As a result this second quote created a Beowulf’s own Lof, his strength lead him to have Lof. Therefore Beowulf’s Lof are shown from his father and through his strength that are carried to be important throughout his life and the story. …show more content…

In line 763-764, one of Beowulf’s warrior said: “I remember that time when mead was flowing, how we pledged loyalty to our lord in the hall.” The quote explain Wiglaf’s loyalty that are still remained towards his lord, because he had not forgotten what he pledged for. In line, 168-172, “He picked us out from the army deliberately, honoured us and judge us fit for this action, made me these lavish gifts and all because he considered us the best of his arms-bearing Thane.” The second quote Beowulf honored his warriors and gave them his lavish that showed his loyalty towards them. However comitatus is Beowulf’s most important culture out of Lof and Wyrd, because Wyrd is shown mostly throughout the story of
