Everyone has taken risks whether they be big or not, they will lead you down the path you choose in life. In the short stories Beowulf, Black Heart, and The Deep taking risks was a big part in all three. In Beowulf, there is many risks that he took, but the main one was that he risked his life to save the people that he loved. In the second book Black Heart by Mark Brazaitis, the girl risked her life to make friends with something she knew could kill her because she was so lonely. In the final book, The Deep by Anthony Doerr the main character made risks every day because he never knew if he was going to wake up to see the next. In this book Emily risked her life to become friends with a dog that she knew could kill her in an instant. The first time she risked her life was when she and Blackheart were by themselves, and Emily stuck her hand in the cage to pet him. She knew that at any moment Blackheart could clamp right onto her arm and kill her. “She felt his teeth touch her skin. She thought he was going to bite down. But his mouth held steady,”(186-187) This quote shows that even when she is trying to just pet him, she is still afraid of him. This shows risk because she doesn't know if he is going to rip her limb off and kill her when she sticks her hand in there or if he is just going to let her do it and not do anything to her. Another way that she risked her life was when she let him out of the gate so that she could be with him. He wouldn’t attack her if she sang to him, but if she had to stop singing for any reason he would get agitated and go back to his mean self and try to go after her. “Stop, she tells herself. Think. If Black Heart were to attack her, Maria could do nothing. Daniel is in Mendoza with his friends. He might come home in five minutes. He might come home in three hours. And Ed and her mother? Even if they were to come, what could they do?”(215-218) In this quote, she is even telling herself not to do it because if anything were to …show more content…

So every day he is risking his life with everything he does. The first way he risks himself is by going to school. He couldn’t get too excited and play with the other kids because his heart couldn’t take it. “ Don’t run, don’t fight, whispers Mother. No games. For Tom the schoolyard seems a thousand acres of sizzling pandemonium. His first day, he lasts and hour, Mother finds him beneath a tablecloth with his fist in his mouth.”(37-40) He can’t handle school, it is too much for him. This shows risk because his mother is risking his life by sending him to school when she knows that if he gets to overstimulated like in the quote he could possibly die from it. The second way he risks his life is when he runs home from the butcher shop after going to the pond with Ruby. He isn’t supposed to run or exercise really because it works his heart to much and he feels faint. “Then Tom ran to the butcher’s and runs home, and his heart races, and spots spread like inkblots in from of his eyes.” Since he is running when he isn’t really supposed to, he is causing his heart to overwork itself. So he is risking his life to run to the butcher shop and home because he doesn’t want his mom to find out that he hasn’t just been going to the butcher shop like he is supposed to. In the end, while he was
