Some aspects of the poems Beowulf and “Robin Hood and Allen A Dale” are alike but they differ immensely as well. They both depict a hero who helps those in need. However, the poems have conflicting worldviews. Also parts of the poems’ text formats are relatable, but some contrast tremendously. Both also have corresponding literary devices, although Beowulf has a greater quantity of them.
The worldviews of the two poems differ in that Beowulf is told from a Christian perspective, and “Robin Hood” is told from a secular perspective. Beowulf often makes references to scripture and Christianity. For example, it refers to the story of creation on line 40 when it says “The Almighty making this earth…” Throughout the whole epic it exhibits many instances where it mentions God or alludes to a biblical reference. Robin Hood on the other hand is almost the exact opposite. Robin hood helps those in need, but he only does so if it benefits himself. For example, robin offers his assistance to Allen a dale, but only if Allen provides his servitude to Robin in return. This is contrary to a Christian worldview because the bible says “love your enemies and be good to them. Lend without expecting to be paid back. Beowulf is an epic and Robin Hood is a ballad. An epic is much longer than a ballad, and it depicts the heroic acts of the main character. Beowulf is about the main character, Beowulf, defeating a multitude of monsters and saving the Hero. A ballad of the other hand, is divided into short stanzas, has a slant rhyme scheme, and is meant to be sung. The rhyme scheme in Robin Hood is evident in every stanza, every second and fourth line rhymes. For example line 6 says “all under the greenwood tree,” and line 8 says “as fine as fine might
