Benito Mussolini Benito Mussolini is a man that once said,”Fascism is a religion. The twentieth century will be known in history as the century of Fascism,” (Mussolini). Benito was a large believer in Fascism. He was also an Italian politician, and he led the National Fascist Party. His date of birth is July 29, 1883, and was born in Predappio, Italy. Mussolini had a very interesting life and family, along with also having a large role in World War 2. To begin with, Mussolini rose to power near the beginning of World War 1 as a leading proponent of Fascism. After World War 1, he became the 40th Prime Minister of Italy in 1922. An article states,”Mussolini’s military expenditures in Libya, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Albania made Italy predominant in the Mediterranean region, though they exhausted his armed forces by the late 1930s,”(History.com). After World War 1, Mussolini decided it was his destiny to rule Italy as a modern Caesar and recreate the Roman Empire. The Italian forces were plagued by national poverty, resource deficiencies, scientific industrial weakness, combined with inflexible commanders. It is stated in an article that,”The king, Victor Emmanuel III, provided monarchist officers with an authority figure to impede Mussolini’s dominance of the armed services,” (History.com). In May of 1939, Mussolini allied himself with Adolf Hitler. Mussolini planned to start World War 2 from 1943-1945 but Hitler started the war in September 1939. This only gave one week’s warning to the Italians and forced an enraged Mussolini to declare “nonbelligerency.” Hitler’s success in May 1940 caused Mussolini to intervene in a presumably short, parallel war. Benito was the eldest of three children. His father’s name was Alessandro Mussolini. His mother’s name was Rosa Maltoni. Benito’s father’s occupation was a blacksmith and his mothers was a schoolteacher and she was also a Catholic. An article explains that his father established in him a passion for socialist politics and disobedience towards authority, (Biography.com Editors). Benito was expelled from many schools for bullying and defying school authorities but he was still given a teaching certificate in 1901. He worked as a schoolmaster for a short amount of time. An article states, “In 1902, Benito Mussolini moved to Switzerland to promote socialism, and quickly gained a reputation for his magnetism and remarkable rhetorical talents,” (Biography.com Editors). Later, Mussolini while engaging in political demonstrations, caught the attention of Swiss authorities and he was eventually expelled from the country. He moved back to Italy in 1904 and continued promoting a socialist agenda. He was then briefly imprisoned and after he was released, he became an editor of an organization's newspaper named Avanti (meaning forward). This made it much easier for him to expand his influence.
