Why Schools Should Provide GMO Free Foods Genetically modified organisms are the new form of farming and pose a major threat to America's health. If one were to walk down the street and ask the average person, what a GMO is, most would know and be able to give basic knowledge about this topic. A survey conducted 80% of 25 people were aware of what genetically modified foods are.The lack of knowledge and regulation of GMOs in the school systems has lead to increased risks among children and adolescents. Plants and animals are injected with hormones and genes from other organisms in order to create something completely different. By doing this the DNA structure is completely altered into something new (Rings). The American Academy of Environmental Medicine proved GMO foods have serious health effects: infertility, immune system problems, accelerated aging, disruption of insulin and cholesterol regulation, gastrointestinal problems, and organ problems (Smith, Against The Grain Nutrition). By genetically modifying food, it cuts farmers and other producers work in half. With using mutant seeds, food companies are able to produce food twice as fast and much easier. It cuts costs and requires less work. The USDA allows GM foods for human consumption without proper testing. They are aware of the health effects of these types of foods (Rings). The quick and easy way to get a fast meal is to run to the drive through. As Americans we always turn to fast food as an alternative to eating healthy. Over 25% of Americans consume fast food daily. Fast food restaurants make over 50 million dollars from daily consumption ("Fast Food Statistics"). It takes four simple components to make bread- water, yeast, salt and flour. There are up to 60 different chemicals in bread, all approved by the FDA. One of these chemicals is found in yoga mats and shoe rubber. This chemical is called, azodicarbonamide. It is also found in 500 different grocery items (“Before You Ever Buy Bread Again”). For the wellbeing and safety of future generations, America needs to take a stand to remove these foods from school lunches. It is doing nothing but harming children and adolescents. Crime rates and drug use is proven to decrease through the change of food. The average child is overweight and the main cause is from the food they eat. By changing the food provided to students, America will be a happy, less violent country.
